I?m a german kitesurfer guy, which take a 1 year Surf & Travel time-out in Australia.
In the year I want to travel to australia completely, improve my english-, kite- and surf skills and learn more from other cultures.

I begin my trip at the 6. Sep. 2013 in Sydney.
My Travelplan is:
Sept.-Oct. <= NSW (light yellow)
Oct.-Nov. <= Victoria & SA (yellow)
Nov.-Dez. <= SA & WA (orange)
Jan.-Apr. <= WA (red)
Mai <= Nor. Ter. (green)
Jun-Aug. <= Queensland (blue)

I saved also all kite & Surfspotmaps from WSKA, NSWK.... so don't worry I will not destroy or disregard your local rules of Spots

Now we come to the question

what kite sizes you use most of the the time for this months or Areas ?

Iam an advanced rider(with 68kg), like Wave and Freeride Sessions and I fly 11,9 and 7m? kites (Naish Parks) in europe(I do not often use the 11m? kite), but for Australia I think that I will use Cab. Switchbalde in 9 & 6m?, they have a good low end, good for waves and are Allrounder.
I will also buy a surfboard in 5.8'in Australia, for kite- and normal surfing.

I follow the Forum since two months, read a lot of threads & topics and I used search.

I hope some of you, can give me a feedback and if we see us, let's drink a bear or talk about some stuff

You've picked the WA time well. You're going to have the best time mate!

Kite sizes are fine, if anything I'd pick 7m2 and 11m2 as a tweak, but I weigh 80Kg.

Funny how here in Oz, we look for places outside Australia to go when the local wind dies off. Your map shows once again it may be possible all year round here at home.

It's not about home experiences. As your trip is long and extensive you will see all wind conditions. It's about what you like to do. So it seems 9 and 6 is right for you.

Personally I would take an 11 first (me 70 kg) and then a small kite ideally a 7 if I wanted to keep to just 2 kites. But that's because I have a different kiting agenda.

I will have some problems with the baggage weight, if I take three kites with me.

I have one baggage where I took all of my stuff,gear & normal clothing.
Free Limit is 30kg(emirates) I will not take an additional bag for ???/A$$$, it isn't comfortable to travel with two big bags!

Kiteboard: 2,5kg (twintip)
Kite: 6 & 9: 5,5kg
Bar(s): 2 * 1kg = 2kg
Harness: 1,5kg
Pump: 0,8kg
other: 1,7kg

Then I need some boardshorts, Shirts, T-Shirts, one Jeans, some towels, and other clothing...

Everybody who?s traverling knows, that?s 11kg isn?t much and for 1 year it's hard to organize


Wetsuite & Surfboard & some noraml stuff I will buy in australia for sure.

So, even better to come with 11m? 9m? and 6m? or only with 9m? and 6m? ?

If I fly a 11m? it's sometimes so boring, and I said me for australia I will kitesurf from 16-35+Knotes and for lightwind days i will go Surfing...

(68kg with 16Knotes and a 5.8?Waveboard will go)



Need some home experiences of you

Some simple tricks that worked for me:

- Ditch the pump and buy one locally. You'll save a lot of space and a bit of weight.

- When you go check in for your flight, wear your harness along with a lot of clothing and other things like cameras, batteries in your pockets (easily 4-5 KG) The idea of this is to cut a couple of extra KG off the scale so you avoid extra charges or your luggage refused.

-After checking in for your flight, stop on your way to oversize luggage, open your board bag and put back the extra stuff that you're wearing back in the bag.

-Airlines only weigh the bags once, when you check-in.

-Simple and effective, just brought 4 kites overseas, no extra charge!
