If your camera producesa mp4, is the process of converting the file to a format that can be edited called 'transcoding'.
From what I have gathered so far, shooting to minidv means than you can import uncompressed files to you computer edit them and then transcode them to dvd, or mp4 of whatever. Correct?
also - don't even get me started on the 5dmkII - equiped with a canon 24 2.8 prime produces (in my opinion) the best looking images the world has aver seen ( i don't own one yet)......... How long before making movies from these cameras becomes a reality? what is missing? The fact that I could use my existing lenses opens up world of creative controll

you can edit any footage. Once you "transcode" its actually normally called rendering not transcoding, you render to a dvd compatible format. Hard drive I believe is easier and faster than minni dv & cheaper. I actually use the minni dv tapes and store the cut files in their original uncompressed format .mt2 - which will vary from camera to camera.
but for mine is 1440 x 1080 50 i, HD. every time you render - you loose quality - especially if you render into a compressed format from an uncompressed format
To get the highest quality - leave the uncompressed files on your hard drive - make sure you set the editing program PROJECT to the same settings as the camera resolution etc ... and render once to the desired output type
