G'day Guys

Needs some advice on learning kiteloops.

Im aware they are potentially a danegrous move, is their a technique to start learning them that will minimize injury and embarrasment. I suppose some sort of stepping stone to the full blown f-16.

Any techniques advice would be greatfully appreciated.

Hey Geeza,
The kitefilm.com has some good tips.
Id also add think transition with and under turn first and then just do your full lock turn earlier and earlier.
Don't just close your eyes and go for it. do heaps of transitions with the kite looping through the power just before or after landing till you get your head around it. Then halve your line length and get above your kite like at the end of the kitefilm clip. (sick loop at the end, worth a watch)
Insurance up to date is always a good idea as well

arh the kite loop, my favorite trick... Get your hands on as many videos as you can find and watch how the guys & girls pull them...

Try in lite winds first... Be committed to it, as changing your mind half way through will cost you... Stay hooked in at first... I found going for a back roll with the loop was easyer at first, dont know why just did... Dont go the F-16 for a while as there insane...

I'm no pro or an expert but I do love pulling a good kiteloop...

I saw Damo out the other day pulling a new varient that I think he may have got off Ryland and god knows where he saw it.. But **** me it looks crazy with a big yank in the middle... I'm going to have to learn it...

He was moving left to right (starboard tack) he unhook'd, threw the kite to something like 9 o'clock with both hands one the left side of the bar... When the yank kick'd in he seem'd to yank harder and down loop the kite while still travelling in the oposite direction, the sudden yank whipped him into a realy fast back roll and then I think he finished it off with a surface pass...

Insane DaMO... I've never seen Ryland pull these but a mate has described it to me, So i'm sure he pulls them effortlessly too...

the higher the better. gives you more time to get the kite back above your head. best 1s ive ever seen are at the 2005 nats. richs double back with loop. he gets so yanked on the second 1. on FA2 there is a good shot of a few crew talking on the beach and you see how much ground he travelsSIDEWAYS. so yeah what rich says.

cheers guys for the handy advice.

Rich -Do you mean when first trying them,to start downlooping looping the kite through a normal turn, as opposed to getting airbourne first?Does this work or do you just get pulled off your edge.

IM TRYIN TO GO THRU THE PROCESS AT THE MO
FURST THIGN TO DO IS WHEN GOING TO CHANGE DIRECTIONS GO TOESIDE AND JUST PULL DOWN INSTEAD OF BACK.
SHUDNT GET PULLED OFF EDGE, BUT U WILL FEEL THE POWER DIFF BETWEEN A DOWNLOOP AND A NORMAL PULL OVER THE TOP.
APARENTLY THEN U DO A JUMP THEN DOWNLOOP, THEN GO FOR BACKWARDS KITELOOPS.
SOME SAY JUST GO ALONG WITH THE KITE HIGH AND DONT POP, JUST PULL BACK AND GET USED TO IT LOOPING. THEN START POPPING AND WHIPPING IT BACK FASTER.
OTHERS SAY JUST BRING IT TO 11-12, THEN POP N GO FOR A BACKROLL AND LOOP IT ROUND.
THEN U CAN GO FROM THERE.
HOPEFULLY ONE DAY THERE WILL BE WIND THAT WE CAN PRACTISE THESE ON.

Why are you yelling Caution? (caps)
Save yourself a heap of time and try your first kiteloop on a day when you can just get enough pull to do a jump.
Go for the biggest jump you can (this should only get you a few feet up due to lack of wind)
At the peak of the jump, just as you start to descend, pull hard with your back hand and you will feel the kite pull you in a downwind direction as you come in to land. As you get confident start to pull with you back hand sooner and try to go into a railey. Eventually you will get the feel for using the kiteloop's power to pop you out of the water instead of initiating a jump first before looping the kite.
Then its a matter of practice, practice, practice until you can do them fully powered up and unhooked. (try at least one every session to keep the trick fresh in your mind)
Kiteloops become quite a safe trick when you understand the timing and how to handle the sudden spike of power they create. The fun really starts when you try short lines and get above the kite.

Hey Geez,
to answer your question. Loop the kite as often as you can turning, transitioning, straight jumping, etc. The idea is to realize the kite can be flown 3D instead of 2D (left then right)
Caution has the right idea that i would suggest as a progression to the kiteloop. If you understand how to underloop the kite when turning or after landing a transition and realize that if you point the board downwind you will not get pulled off your edge then you will start to understand how much pull you will get and inticipate that pull when you eventually try it in the air. The idea is to aviod just pulling it back with your eyes closed. My suggestion with the transition again was pop first like a normal transition...land and then underloop the kite...if you do this in lightish wind you will soon realize it is the best way to stay afloat and generate a bit of quick pull. I suggest this because you definately want to understand these underturns before doing it in the air. If you get comfortable with doing this then all you have to do is crank the turn earlier and earlier untill you first underloop it as your landing and then you can loop it just before landing and then loop it and get it back over your head before landing. Hope this helps it looks like a bit of a ramble...
Thanks for the props Ry/ You rock too as seen countless times in FA2 star of the show.

any1 have any tips on back looping, ie airborne 1st, or anticipate the pull and load up to pop when the pull comes, and is it best to try get height on these or stay relatively low.. im talking powered loops too, not high stay above the head style loops
cheers

Rich would easy be the best person to give tips on kitelooping, but I've been trying the F16 style loops for ages (getting blasted most of the time mind you). I think with shorter lines it's definitely easier to get above your kite and get that powered yank, but for some reason you don't seem to get as worked when you come hooking in to land. Maybe because the kite doesn't have as far to go to get out of the power zone? I haven't landed many trying with the longer lines, even if you go big you drop like a sack of ****, and dropping without any lift from the kite makes you feel like your knees are gonna explode. I tend to use the kite to get the lift, pop off the water, then loop the kite. I think it might be better just to crank the bar the whole way through the turn. It might be enough to get the kite a bit higher so it can take some of the impact out of the landings.
Probably not a very useful answer, but at least I can tell you what doesn't really work
PS. That being said, I still think they are ****in fun and I seem to be going back for more, just watch the knees.

i was using 15m lines for a while...if you continuously pull the kite from when you first iniate the jump on short lines, you will definitely get above the kite. Mind you, I never did land any of them as well as some people I have seen doing them.
My mate tried an F16 off a bit of chop using the 7m on 15m lines and it looked absolutely awesome. He hit the chop with speed and the kite at 12 and initiated the back roll while pulling hard unhooked. I am not exaggerating when I say he was at least 2-3m above his kite. The landing was a bit sketchy though. Check out that link kitefilm.com... the last kiteloop is awesome!
Also, when you start trying them remember to commit the whole way and dont pull out! Also, when you crash, it hurts less when you try them over broken water. Remember to tell people so that they may benefit from the extra entertainment!
