G'day all, the devilfish here..

Ive been kiting for about 2 weeks now and for the first time just got up on the board, things are going well. I now want to start doing Kiteloops as i reakon they look pretty easy but very cool. Any tips?

Ive been thinking I might practise them on land first with my 14 metre fuel. Maybe on cottesloe beach where I would have some spectators. What do you all think..

Please let us all know when you are going to practice. We can then keep well away from you so you can practice.
I hate the site of blood specially my own.

Have you had an lessons from an IKO qualified instuctor? Sounds like you're keen to develop your skills, but if you haven't had any lessons, I strongly suggest you take at least one so you can try kite loops under supervision or at least work up to them and maybe pick up a few pointers on safety. $100 for the lesson might give you the knowledge not to kill a $1500 kite.

Look G'dog- I dont do things by halves

In one month time, i'll be pulling kiteloops to handlepasses and you will still be struggling to stay upwind...

who will be suggesting lessons then..

Ok then if you don't want lessons, Go windsurfing have a new service. You can hire one of their kites, $120 for 3 hours (if they'll let you) and offer advice and supervision. Your topic header asks for help on kite loops, and having someone qualified on the water or the beach to demonstrate and watch you is the best way to get this advice.

See this thread for details and contact.

They are pretty easy if you can hold on. This is how to do them.

first let everyone on the beach know you are going out for your first try at a kite loop so they can pull up the chairs and crack some beers before the entertainment starts. Then:

1. Jump

2. Pull on the one side of the bar as hard as you can, suggest the side to the reverse of the dirction on travel.

3. Land (it may be a little fast and you may have been pulled off balance by the kite travel and if you are going to fall off make sure the kite isn't just coming around the bottom of the power curve as you hit the water and make sure you kick the board off to the side or back because you dont want to hit thaqt thing doing a thousand miles an hour.).

4. Repeat...they arent that hard really, just might take some practice.

Or pay $150 for an IKO qualified instructor who has paid $US 700 for the IKO course from an IKO examiner who paid $$$ for an examiners course. Pull right, kite goes right with power. Pull left, kite goes left with power. It is rocket science.

Devilfish, have you ever seen a kiteloop?
Do you know perform a simple jump?

You need a step by step learning (like everybody)

If you want to try a kiteloop you must be carefull with the downwind zone

Good luck.

Is a down loop different to a kite loop, and is one more dangerous than the other

PsYLoR when you say kiteloop turns, do you mean, your not actually jumping just using a kiteloop to turn in the opposite direction..

I like it
ok go as fast as you can edge really hard then just before you jump point your stick with the back hand directly down wind maybe you can even do two the trick to it is to do em fully powered up or they will turn to slow try to do them close to land so everyone can see you
wow i can tell your gonna be great just listening to you
you remind me of the slingshot rider ben wilson
id say good luck but im sure your not going to need it
gee its such a shame you not one of the local riders at my local beach its just great to have crew like you about you make the sport so great to be a part of

Hi Devilfish
If you want to do a good loop, dont wait until your in the air before you pull hard on the bar. Dont worry, the kite looping will give you plenty.

What you do is, come in upwind as normal, edge hard and slowly bring your kite up toward 12 o'clock. As you have slowed down, pull hard and wait for the ride. Youll get yanked back downwind, all you have to do is point your board down wind and hang on.

Just remember, once you start to loop the kite dont stop no matter how bad its going. It will go all the way around and you will eventually slow down again.

Its not even funny to try and jump and loop your kite on the beach. It will end in a world of pain. Dont even try it in shallow water because you legs might not like being rammed into the bottom after you blow one.

Have fun.

14 m is too small a kite for a really impressive kiteloop

For best audience reaction try a 17 m.

Tomorrow looks good (S/SW 20 - 30 kts).

(now remember children - don't try this at home)

Do one on a 20m kite (dont be scared they look easy remember) and do it unhooked, Maybe you should try an impact vest, Wouldn't want you to break a rib when you stuff up the first few. Make sure you have someone taking pictures so you can post them here too.
Oh yeah you'll want to pull really hard with a bigger kite because they turn a bit slower & make sure your going really really fast and are overpowered or you wont get enough hieght to complete the trick. rofl

Devilfish

You wont manage kiteloops on land as you require some board speed. The best way to do this is to launch your kite and then stand on your mates cars' roof. Ask him to do about 50 kms/hr, jump and pull down as hard as you can with your front hand.

Please tell Shannon Stent when you plan to do this as we would all love to watch this on Fireaway 2

I like your go-for-it attitude Devil, however, maybe you should learn staying upwind, jibing and then boosting during your third week of kitesurfing.

Leave the kitelooping to the end of the month, there's no hurry.

Speaking of K-loops... I've been trying for a while and can go all the way around but just can't land.. can someone help me out with this?

Basically I send the kite back and do a backloop kiteloop with a back spin.
After I feel the yank and spin around,
I end up crashing hard into the water... But the kite is stil in the sky having looped
And I end up facing the direction that I was coming from (sort of like a transition)

What am I doing wrong here?
Do I have to pull on the front hand to land forward
after I feel that yank from sending the kite backwards??

Cheers

Monkey, sounds like your pulling for too long with your back hand through the loop. try to 'feel' the kite as it comes out of the loop and stop pulling, correct the kite with your front hand when you land.
Hard to say though without seeing what your doing.

How come it took this guy so long to get on a board? 2 weeks! With that sort of learning curve it doesn't look good for him pulling kiteloops any time soon!
If he tries one on land will look out for the obituary...

Is this a "troll" - someone who places something completely
bullxxxx in a forum to get everbody excited, throws in a few comments
to heat it up and lets it spin off into excited discussion. [}:)]

It worked well I must say ...

Hey Devilfish,

You can't be serious, so here is a non serious answer.

Step 1. Pick a really busy Sunday at say Cottesloe Beach, in front of the Sunday Sesh crew. I suggest you get a powerful kite that stays fully powered in a turn, like a Reactor 9.0, you really don't want anything wussy that will blow off power or turn on itself killing the apparent wind power.

Step 2. Then, go out in 30-35 knots, ride as fast as you can but stay within inches of the beach for safety (of course). Now check to make sure everyone withing a hundred metres is watching, or scream out for attention, and with the kite just a few metres off the water and at full speed, pull the trigger with your back hand as hard as you can. (You should do this trick with a 50cm pulley bar so as not to let out any power with a depowerable bar).

Step 3. Expect a mild lift and a gentle pull in the downwind direction, nothing you can't handle of course. Most real heros do it naked with a funnel up their bum so they can have a free colonic irrigation at the same time, it also really impresses the ladies and you'll be a role model for other kitesurfers for years to come.

Geez, what can possibly go wrong! A free irrigation and the respect and admiration of all your peers and idolisation from the general public and surf life savers. Good on ya!

If on the other hand you are serious come and see me or any other experienced, qualified IKO Instructor for a 1 hr lesson in Kiteloops under supervision in good conditions.
