Hi Everyone,

Just a quick email to find out how many of the kiters on this forum would be interested in competing in the Lancelin Ocean Classic marathon for 2009 if it was avalible. Of course it would be organized so it was safe and relevant for kiters. Nothing is finalized yet, just wanted a show of interest to see if it would be worth the time arranging it as part of the Lancelin Ocean Classic.

Look forward to your feedback.

Yep, I'd go in it again, last time I lost my board and had to body drag the last 3 or 4 km's, so I can only do better next time.

The course using all the marks is about 28km's (I think) as the windsurfers. Do Last time we just went around two marks which is a lot shorter. One mark is straight out from Ledge and one out from Lancelin.

It's a lot of fun and as always the Miss Flying Objects comp and the party at the pub is well worthwile.

I was lucky enough to get a ride in a chopper last year so check out the windsurfing footage on you tubes, the leaders took about 30 minutes, pretty quick.

It would be fun, but I'm against it being on the same day as the windsurfers race. It is their event, and has been for a long time. Even if we do it the day after it would be fine, but I think it would be unfair to the windsurfers if we show up and ruin it for them.
I would definately be in for a similar event on a different day.

I kite at Ledge quite often as i have place there. I watched the 2006 windsurfers Ledge to Lancelin. I have done a downwinder from Ledge to Lancelin. I would be in it but i make the following observations and suggestions.

There is a reef line parallel to the coast of variable distance out. Generally it is 200 to 300m out. It is possible to kite on the inside of the reef from Ledge to Back Beach Lancelin. I have done this with Paul ( whom i met a Ledge) in a strong SW 25knts +..and it was fantastic....Paul said he saw a dolphin swimming next to me although i didn't see it .
(Out of interest there is a very tame dolphin at Ledge who approaches boats for a feed. My daughters and i were out fishing and he came up next to our boat and we fed him and patted him on the nose...my daughters thought it was awesome ).

The Ledge to Lancelin downwinder inside reef is a mixture of flat water sections and some modest wave sections. It isn't a great distance probably similar to say Floreat to Scarborough. Depending on tides and the condition of the beach it is possible to drive ( 4 wheel drive ) from Ledge to Back Beach. Certainly possible for 4 wheeled off road vehicles. I mention this as back up is a consideration.
The winsurfers go outside the reef , quite a way out..maybe 1-2km. This probably suites this sort of craft and for them it is a speed race. I suggest a downwinder staying inside the reef ..more fun for kiting in my opinion

DEFINITELY!
That would be awesome Rob if it happens again

I'd love to race the same course as the windsurfers at the same time (but I'm sure that ain't gonna happen in my life time) or at least on the same day so we can compare times.

In the past they let kites go as soon as there was enough wind while the cray boats were in position just waiting - if they set a threshold of 10-12 knots minimum to start the kites then I reckon kites could still give windsurfer times a run for their money - even if they started in 15 knots+.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you for all of your feedback.

If the event committee agrees that Kites will be part of the event (which in my personal opinion they should be) they would sit down with WAKSA and people such as Ian (if they are interested in helping). Then discuss the best way to make the Kite part of the event safe and fun. This will assure everyone get’s to the party safely for a few beers.

As I said earlier at the moment it is only a small bit of research to see if it would be viable putting time and effort into organizing Kiting as part of the classic.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Funny this topic has come up, I have just come home from a week chilling up at Lano. I have watched a few classic's and reckon it would be great for kiters to do the event, and would love to be in it if it happens next year.

I had a sightseeing boat ride from Lano to Ledge yesterday with a crayfisherman who's boat acts as one of the markers for the race (about the middle of back beach, inside the reef is his spot every year). I was saying it would be great to have a kite version of the race, and he seemed to like the idea.

This leads to a few comments- I feel it could be chaos to have kites and poleys racing (especially launching!!!) together, but it is a major and costly undertaking to get the marker boats and support boats (all local fisherman and I think they are volunteers) out there twice, also, many of the fisherman dont know a lot about how kites work (they have lived with windsurfers for a long time, and are quite knowledgable about how they operate).
After thinking about this a fair bit this week, I feel that it would be very viable to run a kite classic race just before the poley race (we dont need as much wind) so as to only have the boats all out there one time, and having a really good safety and rescue plan organised (especially educating the boats how to deal safely with kites, and ensuring all kiters know how to prepare properly for a boat rescue).

I think it also needs to be presented to the poley's in a light that is constructive, not destructive, to what has been traditionally their big day, and not step on toes.

I think it's a great idea.

Not to sound like a when we, but in South Africa every year they have the Langebaan downwind race. Kites have won for the last few years. http://forums.ikiteboarding.com/forums/thread/23111.aspx

In Natal, they have the da real downwind series, a series of 4 or 5 races with kites, windsurfers and surfskis. www.fsportz.co.za/eventpage.php?cp=110&mode=

It would be excellent to have something like that in Perth (or WA)

Cheers

Hey Rob,

I'd be in, willing to offer the use of our rounding marks and boat if necessary. I think a proper race rather than a fun event would be the go. There are enough "fun" events, a decent race would be sick.

If I can help, gimme a PM Rob.

Cheers mate,
