Hi Ladies,

What kite sizes to do you use mostly in the Sydney summer - on flat water? I'm coming back from Dubai where the wind is light and I use my 13m all the time. I need to know which kites to bring with me.

Hi Kathy.
It really depends on your wieght. The summer seabreezes are usually 15 to 25 knots. With the occasional 30 knot day. The southerlys can get up to 50 knots but are mostly in the 20 to 30 range. We get plenty of days in the 8 to 15 knot range so bring the 13

As a male at 70 odd Kgs I have a 14m 10m and 7m bow style kites In Summer I ride the 10m about 75% of the time.

One of the smaller girls in the area (-50 kgs) gets away with a 9m and 7m bow.

Buy something in the 8,9 or 10 area and think about one even smaller.

Ian's right, it all comes down to your weight really.
I'd recommend you bring a 9m as well. I only use my 12m but most of other female kiters usually get away with their 9m all rounder. So bring your 13m for the light days and a smaller kite too... If you can only take one kite, then go for the smaller one.

Gosh Em....you were holding a 12M down in 35knots today....either that has some depower or you had better stay off the beers and concrete chasers....jokes

My kite rocks and I've got "balls of steel" (quoting Caelah), it seems to do the job

-up to 35 knots, beyond I look like a human projectile... as you may have noticed...(Gee, I start feeling parts of my body I didn't even know existed...)-
But hey, I was being pretty down to earth (couldn't resist...

) when saying a 9m for Kathy was... sensible...

Personally I think Flying Any 12m kite weighting between 65 and 70 kg’s (you maybe even lighter) in 35 knots of gusty NW is verging on stupidity. I hear someone hit a groyne today!!

Well, it's not like I meant to: got out at 11am, there were 20 knots if... As it picked up I went "ok, so far so good". Was good for a while... I came in when it wasn't good any more and finished the day on my 9. I didn't think it would be a smart thing to do, it was just one of those days, **** happens. But hey, at least, now I know my top end with my kite...

I totally agree with you, rigging a 12m in 35 knots would be plain stupid...

Oh Kathy there is also guy Paul who flys F-1 Impact in the area, he Wieghts 85-95 kgs and has (I think) 15 11 and 9 as his range. I hope this helps as a guide.

Em it happens to all of us. Would have been there today but hurt my knee yesterday. Go small on any wind out of the West you never know whats going to happen next. Id rather swim a small kite in than get yanked across a road

Hi Kathy,

I'm riding Cabrinha SB3 and for summer season I use my 8m or 6m with 1.28 board and I'm usually ok , of course still depends of the wind !!!

Captain Safety......what the!!....yesterday was perfect weather for a 12m, Reason: the sunnier it is , you need more canopy to create a shadow from...better than sunscreen.

OK...maybe I was a little overpowered at 95kg's...and not a wise move,...verging on stupidity??....no.. more like up to your neck in it... though fun was had.
