Hey Guys
What are the winds like in Melbourne during this time of the year to easter?
Where are the spots near the city and what should I look out for?

Cheers

Its been poor wind lately, but picking up this week.

Spots near Melb are St Kilda - mostly a north/south beach, so anything that doesnt have east in it is OK...lots of learners though - unless you are a show pony and then you can go into the area near the pier.

Altona runs more east/west, anything with south in it is good...very tidal though - best times are when its high tode and you get lagoons of very flat water regardless of how hard it is blowing.

Another option is Brighton (kite beach) - north/south again, with waves.

For anything northerly you are best to go down the bay to Rye/Rosebud or Pt Henry Geelong.

Well out of the city, plum spots are Inverloch down near Philip Island and Sandy Point near Wilsons Prom.

Hey Mr Plow,

You forgot Pt Danger at Torquay. A great spot if you like the waves. Good in Souwest if my memory serves me well.

Happy days!

Point Danger seems pretty overated. Tides and swimmers/beachgoers make it a pretty difficult place to launch & land. Wind doesn't line up with the waves very well because of the angle of the reef. Best spots are on the reefs around the area but these are generally crowded with surfers even in pretty strong onshores which make these spots less than ideal. Open beaches are the best bet but do get pretty choppy.

if you are willing to drive, a very unknown beach we kite at is Merriks beach, just north of Pt Leo. Anything from SSW - S - SE - E - ENE is perfect as the wind is very "full", without any holes or huge lulls. Then there's Rye, McRae and Dromana for the winds with Northerly in them. Southerly, especially SW seems to be good along the LongBeach area (Seaford to Aspendale).

i am only a n00b, so i dont know alot of spots, just the ones i go to that are uncrowded so i dont kill ppl with my kite

Just a word of warning with Merriks, there are rocks in the shallows about 15-20m out, so be careful of these when u first launch.

Good luck finding a spot.

Pt Leo is a surf beach, also Gunamatta, i have seen kites at both of these surf beaches, and some dude was going off in about 25knots at Pt Leo about 2 months ago.

Bring all the kites youve got. Wind this week is going 25 knots - more usual is 10-15 or 15-20 i.e. covers the whole quiver. If you had to bring one kite make it your mid-range 12m or 14m.

Surfing on the bay - I dont think so - you will be looking at over an hours drive to any surf beach either Torquay or back beaches on the Mornington Peninsula.

mornington peninsula........ thats my neck of the woods!

http://www.triggerbros.com.au/ptleo2.htm <-- right out the back and to the right of screen is where we saw a kiter going off!

www.triggerbros.com.au/suicide.htm <--the other side is Suicide, seems popular for pole surfers there. i wouldnt even surf there, no if you got the balls, go for it

www.triggerbros.com.au/gunna.htm <--this is a long ocean beach, good breaks all the way south to Cape Shank, walk down the beach away from the surfers and you should be sweet, especially with the SE and SW winds we getting atm, makes the waves a lil too choppy to surf, but should be good for "up-ramps" when kiting.

winds have been irregular the last few days, so bring a few kites.

hope this helps..
