Moving to Queensland from WA next year and am driving over to take in some epic outback experiences. I need to get a game plan together as to which beaches to kite at. I’ve four weeks (not four months) so I just want to check the classic spots i.e Margarets, Esperance, Cactus e.t.c –

Does any one know if there is a windsurfing or kitesurfing publication that enlightens you on the best sailing destinations around OZ ? – or can crew help me out with some suggestions.

Leaving Perth around the 10 th of January to be on the Goldie a month later – should be an interesting drive.

p.s

There’s a spare seat for cool kiter

Went to Byron Bay a few years back before kiting came on the seen. I reck'n Tallow Beach would be an awesome spot. Not sure about the wind thou? Byron's a really cool place anyway...

Lennox Head, which is 1/2 hour south of Byron, seemed to be pretty popular when I was there last Jan. The guys were having an awesome time in the surf and getting heaps of hang time, the surf starts breaking about 100m out and rolls through to the shore.

I saw a couple of guys on the beach at Tallows but they didn't go out, there can be a pretty narley beach break to get through there. Lennox seemed to have more of a kiting scene.

Have a great trip and happy kiting .

I'm going to Byron in October next year. Any idea of what conditions are like then?

I'ts a great concept with the surf on the East coast compared to WA. It usually breaks further out and rolls in over a distance - it creates this huge zone between the waves that is quite flat with sandy bottoms that is perfect for busting all the moves. Look foward to checking it all out - Probarly not as much wind over there so I might have to pack a surfboard as well.

I've only been to Byron in Jan so don't know what the winds would be like in October but I reckon the surf would be pretty good so if you surf be sure to take a board for at least the mornings before the wind, if there is any.

I got great waves at Belongil and Tallows at Byron and Broken Head about 5km south.

Enjoy

Gerroa, south of Kiama in NSW is an amazing windsurfing spot, the wind blows very consistently in summer, from a cross-off direction, I'm not sure whether the locals kitesurf there, but I assume they would. Check out the NSW wavesailing association website for some photos, www.nswwavesailing.org.
Further north, Windang Island is also good, there are also numerous other beaches along the Wollongong coast that may also be good for kitesurfing. I used to live there and found some great windsurfing spots.
