I don't know 100% but I thought that you were not allowed to Kitesurf in the actual lake? Today I took my boys to the lake for a swim and there was a guy there setting up his kite on the shore of the lake (down near the playground end). Him and his two mates then walked the kite out into the lake to a sandbank and proceeded to practice their kite skills.

I know that I myself am only a learner but even I know that you really have to have a safe distance between yourself and other swimmers (lots and lots of children) and this guy didn't.

What was even worse was that one of the guys that were helping him launch his kite (believe me it was really only TRYING to help) was drinking and the other guy was pulling on one of the lines to help get the kite in the air.

There was no regard for ANYBODY'S safety.

Sorry just had to have a whinge.

Hi Mytchook, that's exactly what the S/coast does'nt need. All it takes is for one 'dogooder' to complain about the'marine thrill seeking cowboy's' endangering the safety of the public and whamo, there is another notch on the barrell for the people against kiteing on 'our' waterway's.Typical scozza mentality i.e,drinking and kiteing definately don't go together! cheer's

it was crap because he had NO idea what he was doing and neither did his mates. I don't want people to complain to the council because of people like this knob either. (I'm not a dogooder, but like you said, "one more cowboy....")

Common sense would tell the average kitesurfer NOT to practice where there are just heaps of people (especially kids).

Besides Lake Currimundi is not exactly the ideal place to go............

Its good mytchook telling us all this, what is even better is if you tell the "cowboys" what they are doing an how it affects the whole kiting community,I know most people dont like the confrontation but hey thats what it is going to take, dont worry if your only a beginner, you still are the one who knows better than the "cowboy" and if it stops an accident, well an good.
It really is up to all of us to speak up.

!!!!NO KITING IN CURRIMUNDI LAKE!!!
Its official, since the council made it a bathing reserve a century ago.
That also means no powered vessels, eg. tinnies
But I've seen them in there,
The best thing to do if you see someone about to make a big mistake!
Is inform them of the situation (without a face off)
and hope people do the right thing!!
GOOD LUCK
Cheers Sam

Quote from an earlier thread.

Caloundra City Council have contacted us regarding 2 incidents which have occurred recently.

The CCC Supervising Lifeguard mentioned that a little girl was hit by a kite on Currimundi Beach recently and her mother has lodged a complaint.

A local councillor raised an issue in Council meeting today regarding kitesurfers inside Currimundi Lake. Several residents contacted council to complain.

Please be cautious while kiting at Currimundi.

Kitesurfing is NOT PERMITTED inside Currimundi Lake and kitesurfing in direct onshore (easterly) conditions on crowded beaches is dangerous and irresponsible.

Caloundra Council is very supportive of our sport but incidents like these are attracting the wrong kind of attention and will inevitably lead to restrictions if they continue to occur.

Face a similar problem myself with 3 kids as yet unwilling to take up kitesurfing (I guess 6yrs old is a bit young!!). Used to do an extended family thing (4-5 families) with surfing - taking turns in the waves and then with child minding duties on the beach. Wonder if the same principle could work with kiting? Love to go kiting 2morrow now the sun is back out, but don't have a babysitter
