Has anyone gone kiting in Holland? Going there next month and would appreciate some advise on where the best spots are and where I can source some gear on a rental basis. This site (http://www.kitehigh.nl/arloc.php) shows a lot of locations, but I can't read dutch...

Was speaking to a Dutch guy at Woodies on Sunday.

He reckons it can be pretty good but is usually gusty. He has kited with snow on the beach, winter it's thick wetties and booties and gloves, summer it's think wetties.

He said they get breezes maybe 2-3 days a week in summer and he knows some sectret spots. he reckons there not many flat water options, mostly choppy or waves up to one metre.

You might see him around, he's here for a few weeks and staying at the Old Fire Station Youth Hostel in Freo, didn't catch his name but he was flying an Airush Rector, white with a redish logo. Hanging with a tall German guy, he is shorter, with messy blonde hair.

Cheers

I've heard from a few Dutch crew up here that they kite around the Zeeland (Zealand??) area on the North sea. Good luck and take a wetty.

Schevenining is the beach closest to Den Hague, and is a pretty popular spot, including the 'Jump Club' down the south end of the beach where kiters hang out. The other place I have been is also pretty popular - Oostvoorne, which is a flatwater inland lagoon sort of thing - the Dutch do a good line in these. You have to be a bit careful at Scheveningen - the usual: busy beach with lots of punters, (it is a wide beach though) and Oostvoorne is a big of a bugger to get out at now because they have shut the main carpark, so its a bit of a walk - but not far.

This is a link to the webcam on the beach:

although it looks pretty uninspiring in the middle of winter.

You can have a look at this fishing page for some idea of what oostvarne looks like. It's near Hoek van Holland (which is where the ferry to England comes in)

There are other places to go - plenty of them..there's lots of flat water in holland, but I stuck to these two just cos I always went with other people. People also go to Texel which is a big sand island off the (north holland) frisian coast and the ijselmeer but I think this is more for offshore winds. Not sure.

It will be cold, but the important thing is to eat lots of rookwurst. The best thing is that Holland is that it small and so it doesn't take long to get anywhere, but remember, it's full of natives fired up on coffee you can stand a spoon up in and screaming about in small european cars, so if you are biking - take care.

I've done ijselmeer and it was great - drove there for a day from the middle of Germany. cold and grey, but great flat fresh water. Strand Horst i think was the beach - complete with hot coffee, snacks and plenty of room. The wind was a little gusty and by the end of the day there were about 30 kitesurfers and 60 windsurfers, but they kept to their own beaches, and there was no agro. The Dutch beaches were great on the day, but the dutch ovens in the car on the way back to germany were unbearable.

I was in Holland for the 2000 world titles in Scheveningen near the Den Haag, alot of people kite there and there is a great little coffee shop nearby called Blue White on Gentsestr.not far from the information centre. If you stay in Scheveningen avoid Scheveningen Hotel, its a dirty little fire trap. Also try Noordwijk,Monster near Hoek van Holland but you will find there is not many flat water spots just the north sea and bloody cold.
