I'm still new to the kiteboarding scene (loving it by the way!!) and been talking to others in the know and have noticed that the name bestowed to our sport is devided between kitSURFING and kiteBOARDING. Addmittedly the point i've raised means nothing when you're focused in the moment or making an awsome boost but I'm curious as to what others call it or what they think it should be called. I mean, we have the Australian KITEBOARDER magazine yet the forum I'm posting this topic under is "General KiteSURFING". Can't think of any other sport that has two names maybe "SOCCER" and FOOTBALL maybe I'm not thinking hard enough!!!!
Personally I think kiteboarding sounds more right.

I just call it kiting.

e.g. Im going kiting

You didn't look far for a sport with two names Windsurfing and sailboarding.

Wakeboarders and wakestyle people push kiteboarding
and windsurfers and surfers push kitesurfing.

id also say kitesurfing before kiteboarding if someone asked for absolutely no logical reason.

no waveslave......the punks dont need a wake, only a kicker or slider so maybe something like kiteboarding which includes almost everyone's dicipline will do. Whether you use a kite to surf, skate, ski, dangle or flip, if you do it with a board your a kiteboarder.

There is little doubt that the official term is Kiteboarding; think of nearly ALL the major brands AND magazines; Naish, North, Wipika, Slingshot, KBMag, Kite Boarding, etc, etc, etc. They all sell and promote Kiteboarding gear.

However the 'street' term is Kitesurfing - it just what pops into peoples minds first, especially for non 'kiteboarders'. This presents a small problem for website developers where approximately 4 times the number of people search for the term Kitesurfing, than do kiteboarding...

Wakekiters never raise their kites higher than 45 degrees.

Their handle-bars have a built-in spirit level with angle-gauge attached.

They seek out the biggest motor-boats, chasing down the knee-high sneaker wakes peeling from the prows.

They like all white boots with gold medallions;
not unlike sleazy used-car salesmen or fat middle-aged tragics at the 20-somethings niteclub.

Mmmm, I might just say "I'm going out" next time I want to go kiting!
it's true though what macca said! When I say I'm learning to fly a kite to the lay people I get some cynical looks! HA HA. Ahhh.... they don't know what they are missing out on! Thanks for the help but I reckon disscusing what it should be called has only deepened the mystery

Met this chick the other day, did some tuning, when we got around to what she does for recreation she tried to pass off 'fly my kite at the beach'. She got the wrong guy, she couldn't get rid of me for hours after that. 'I fly kites too'.

Or you could just go with Paulio's nan, 'you going to do that parachute surfing thing again today?'

This is how my insurer ended up interpreting it...

"The exclusions regarding aircraft or aerial devices or watercraft more than 3 metres in length would not apply to a surfing ski pulled along by a surfing kite."
