Has anyone successfully managed to kite in any of the various lakes around Brizzy? A local bloke at work today suggested that I try Lake Kurwongbah, which is just near me. I reckon the other larger lakes like Wivenhoe or Samsonvale might be a bit better, the ground out there is pretty flat for ages around.

In my experience, you really need a solid 300-500m of flat ground or water to smooth out the rotors from trees, hills etc before sailing can be reasonably clean. This would make your spot selection pretty crucial, or you'd end up with dirty, gusty, shifty wind and it would not be pleasant at all.

So who's tried it, and has it been successful? I guess we need a bit of rain so there's some more water in the buggers first eh......

nah wivenhoe's got more surface area. i think it's a moot point at the moment though because both lakes have precisely jack **** water in them.

wivenhoe looks to be the closest of the big lakes to brisbane, kurwongbah is closer to me on the northside here but i'm not sure it'd be large enough. worth a look though. would make a killer spot for westerleys. anything beats wello i guess......

Neill, suggest that you wait until the next tropical low comes this way. I have sailed both lake Samsonvale and Wivenhoe many times in my skiff years ago. 4kts on Samsonvale NE - SE equates to about 20 - 25 on the bay and worse at Wivenhoe and Somerset. You will probably find that you will need permits and Public Liabilty Cover. Westerly Winds like this morning could be fun though....watch out for tree stumps, old barbed wire fences, and old tractors hiding just under the surface. Other things to watch for are weed patches like carpet (leads to serious face plants) and D.P.I. Fisheries Research Electricuting fish and any stray Kiters.
