Are there any safe locations around Perth that are safe to go out in an easterly breeze?

yep its looking good for Sat morning,

especially after a week of no afternoon southerlies

try a few locations on the river.

Peli Point sees a few people in the morning easterlies

as does

Pt Walter

Not sure of other spots though,

Rotto would be good

If you are going out @ Peli Pt please DO NOT walk along OR within 50m of the beach East of the fence! This has been posted on this forum several times and there is also a sign on the fence.

A CALM Officer was down there yesterday (Thurs 3 Mar) investigating a complaint by a local bird watcher that kite surfers were in breech of the agreement that WAKSA has negotiated with CALM in order to prevent a ban. Unfortunately while he was there the wind dropped and there were 3-4 kiters walking on the beach and a few others within 50m :-(

Some local bird watchers want us banned from the entire CALM reserve which is from the boat ramp South and Eastwards for some distance ie the entire area used by most kiters - see the map near the setup area.

Let's not get ourselves banned - play the game and educate others if they are not aware.

South Perth (but be careful of ferries and channel markers) and Pt Walter are options in E - ENE.

Hopefully this sort of info and much more will soon be available at kiteboardingwa.org.au/

Watch out for the river shark (bronze whaler) seen down in the mornings at Peli recently. Especially when an Easterly is blowing.

And if the shark does not get you , don't the crabs come out in the morning at Peli point and point Walter when its a Easterly , very dangerous on the toes .

Hey guys you forgot about the birds.
There's a reason the birdwatchers don't want us down there.
Early in the morning, especially when the wind is up, those birds become carnivores and attack anything they think would be nice and meaty...

Point Walter is not the safest location. If you have ever seen it on a mega low tide you'd be amazed like I was at how much more sharp cap rock there is just below the surface. We all know the bits in close and just upwind of the sand bar, but there's whole extra fields in spots I thought were just sand on both sides of the sand bar, hence the existence of the sand bar. Apart from the jagged, board munching, butt tearing, knee shredding buondies, it's a long walk back to your car from Mossie Park if it all goes to s**t. I wouldn't go there!

YEp its a bugger, I have done it, the swim back from the DARK SIDE. I probably would have been run over by a ferry if a boat didnt pick me up. Make sure you are frakken confident about staying upwind before you kite there.

VB tells the truth... last time I was there so was VB, he had never seen the tide so low...

It is a pretty technical spot to kite, you want to have your upwind riding dialed in before you even think about throwing up your kite. But jeeze when you know where the rocks, reef, lumps, tyres, poles, shallows are you can realy appreciate its wonder in a clean 18kt easterly 6am morning around this time of year...

This place is not for the faith hearted or a beginner as on many a clean day most of perths kiting whos who can be found boosting massive airs over the point. If your a begineer I would reconmend sitting on the beach with a coffee and watching. Alernatively, about half a Km up the beach going east there is another little spot that would serve you better. The only problem, it has a gnarly launch & landing zone...

I suggest the little beach about 1km east of the spit. I've not kited there yet, but it looks like a great location. It looks fairly shallow though. Can anyone say whether there are rocks there?

yeah there are rocks, sharks, nesting birds, crabs, really tiny launch area, water only ankle deep right out, loads of pylons in the river.
Also its a nature reserve,
wouldnt bother kiting there.

Hey, and I would not recommend Woodies either...

There are heaps of scubba diving ants at the moment. The CALM ranger and the antwatchers told me that they have completed their stokpiling for winter and they take their break over there for winter.
My Grandad confirmed the information.

Police have secured the area so there s a 3 km walk to the beach now...

Happy to help,
Fred

Kited Point Walter on Tues morning, CRAP!!
Kited Thompson Bay and Bickley Bay Rotto Sat morning, much better. I suggest if you are desperate, get on a early ferry to Rotto next time its forcasting 15/20knts from the east, take a surf board and surf after your morning kite when the wind backs off and Bullets is turning on!!
I find the easterly to be a lot smoother at Rotto, it has around 15klms of flat water to smooth itself out over before it hits Rotto, it was surprisingly steady without those huge pockets in it like you get on the river. Knock your self out!!!

Hi graeme,
i've kited where you mention in an easterly. Nice - relaxed and uncrowded. There's a dog beachy bit, so it pays not to have the gear lined up on the beach too long.

just needed to remind poochie that the arc was not there to be used in marking his territory. Better up in the air out of the firing zone.Enjoyable sessions had there never-the-less.

little ****ers can run over your kite and tear the canopy when excited or called by their ****wit owners who then proceed to threaten to bash you when you approach them with a "your dog just ripped my brand new $2000 kite".
Sorry...just a bit of history.
