Man big stretch of coast to travel with plenty to offer if its on. Brisvegas to Townsville is around 15 to 16 hours , maybe a bit more cause of the roadworks between Miriam vale, Rockee to yamba, it is clear the rest of the way. Then around 5 to 6 to cairns. If you drive an unleaded car, fill everything up you have with it , cause its 20 cents litre more from buying in Briso to the highway.
MArch can be a bit sketchy up in NQ if the monsoon is active. But we have good days.
Some spots i would recomend a must, Rainbow both DI end and inskip end , if its strong sthly, below the surf club for a few waves and for flat sections up at inskip on the inside at low tide on the make 500 metres south of the barge,INSIDE.
If its blowing North, North west get up to DI and kite the lagoon and be prepared to share the zone if its on . Midweek would be the go if you could jag it that way. A few surf options here as well, just search.
There is a kite/surf shop opposite the Pub and the fish and chip shop on the left on the way in is real good, shes a bit cranky but cooks good.
Burrum river , Hervey bay and Agnes, The heads are all worth a look.
Not sure about Gladstone to Bowen stretch but there are heaps of spots just be prepared to explore and follow your instincts.
Bowen is another, harbour side and the ocean side, fun in the right winds.
and coming north you have the elliot river, you will need a boat but unreal flat water. wunjunga (low tide best), Alva and Cungulla,Palleranda all worth a look if it is windy. Not sure of nth of Townsville.
Only other advise would be to Bring a large Kite and
Above Rocky , Wear you boardies over your skins, it may save your life.

Have fun
