Hey all,

Browsing on the web tonight I came across this info on the NSW Waterways website, it is interesting to read and the guidelines should be followed by all kiters not just NSW as they make sense to all. It also answers a few questions I have noticed floating about on the forum.

Congratulations to A.K.S.A. and W.A.K.S.A. for making a great contribution to the credability of the sport. We are finally coming of age! Now if we can just avoid issues like the Narrows Bridge Incident .....

Fair winds to all,

Is this what you are referring to Darren

www.rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime/index.html

The reason that issue was raised in that area was predominantly caused by the actions of one kitesurfer and one older surfer and his supporters firing up Waterways.

It could easily have been avoided, and the spot in question shared with surfers easily if antagonistic and aggressive territorial behaviour was avoided.

We are the new kids on the block, being aggressive and inconsiderate with other beach, and water using locals, will only lead to us being banned from spots.

Sorry folks, I copied the link and forgot to paste it in.

This is the link I was talking about

www.rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime/index.html

Steve, I dont know if you thought I was being sarcastic, emailing sucks for that, no feeling of mood accompanies the text. I reckon the guidelines on their website are beaut and just that we are being taken seriously enough to be put into their safe boating handbook.

Have a great day all

Was thinking about the coming of age thing just a couple of days ago. When windsurfing was in full swing during its "birth" a movie was made called "WindRider" which starred Tom Burlinson, and Nicolle Kidman! (released 1986)

The plot .. "PC Simpson is an enthusiastic surfer. With the help of his father's company's engineer Howard he develops a high tech windsurfing board for the coming world surf championship. But then he falls in love with the singer Jade - and sport, friends and championship become secondary..."

Part of the theme of the movie was about trying to do the "first forward loop", and they used footage of local hotshot David Sheene ..

Bring it on! .. Lozza

How many kitesurfers are there in the greater Sydney area/NSW ball park figure?

Steve u might be in a good position to answer this question.

I think < 1000.

G'day
Darren, no did not think there was anything sarcastic in your comments. (And I don't bite much anymore too busy and Laurie has my teeth in a jar at his place!! )

The link I found is similar but does refer to a specific area where there have been some problems and NSW Maritime has had to get involved.
NSW Maritime is run by people who love the waterways and they respect all legit uses of them, including kitesurfing, have always found them to be extremely helpful and co-operative.
Its great that they have put in writing that Sydney Harbour is a no go zone, the bad boy is still going out off Neilsen park, but he will get his soon I reckon.

No real way of telling how many kiters, but my guess is similar to yours. Last weekend I estimated there were 100+ kiters on Boatany Bay spread between Brighton, Dolls and Kurnell. Count on another 100 or so on the North shore, then the Central coast and Newcastle would have at least a couple of hundred. Rest of NSW at least 200 - 400, so there you have it somewhere <1000?
