Hey all, I'm a Canadian moving to Melbourne for 7 months (Aug-Mar) and started kiting here in Canada this year. I'm wondering what the typical kite sizes are (I'm 195lbs/88kg, I ride a 16m, 12m and 9m Liquid Force M80 C-kites)? What are the typical winds during this time of year?
What kind of wetsuits do people wear? I have a full 4/3 wetsuit and a 2/1 shortie... should I bring both?
Does everyone use directional boards (I have a 140 cm Liquid Force Element)?
Where is the best place to kite (St. Kilda)?
Any advice anyone can offer would be appreciated. Beer's on me...

Aug to Mar is the best time to be in melbourne. You will be on your 12 most of the time, bring both wetsuits, probably isnt as cold as canada, but it still gets chilly. St Kilda is a great spot, there are many other spots on the bay though. If you want to fit in whilst riding in st kilda, you will have to transfer to a bow kite, wear a darth vader esque helmet, and a board leash, and a floatation jacket.

Are there any regulations for kiting in Mel? In Canada we're still not recognized as a 'water sport' so we're not required to wear flotation devices like windsurfers.
I don't have a helmet, but my harness has an impact vest built in. And because I don't wear a helmet I don't use a board leash. Most of our kiting is in flat water or 2-4 feet of waves. No problem body dragging upwind to get my board after a crash.
Happy to hear about the 12m! Here in Ontario, Canada we mostly get frontal systems coming through which rip to the point where we use 7-9 meters OR we get lake breezes (Great Lakes) and have to pump our 16m kites up and still can't hold our position. Large kites can be a drag for sure...
Thanks for the help,

Zanzibar, great links...
Beer's on me if there's no wind!
I'd much rather drive an extra ways than try to kite somewhere where's there's too many people (kiting or otherwise). Usually worth it.
Here in Ontario we sometimes drive 2-3 hours to find a good site with the right wind.

Hi mate,

Depending on what your doing in melbourne work wise, you may find that ducking down the bay after work during the week is great (light till 8:30-9 if the wind lasts), sure enough there are a few people around (packed at St Kilda) but then on the weekends you can travel to either side of the bay (2 hours approx) to hit the ocean surf or some great inlets.

If your keen, I'm in a group of local kiter's, kind of a club but not very official, anyway all good people and we meet after work and go on weekend trips away, tell each other how good we are, etc etc so if your looking for some tour guides you can come and hang with us and we'll show you around. Thats goes for anyone else whos interested (and kite obsessed)... PM me.

just a word of warning dont kite in the mordialloc to frankstone section of the bay the dude's there are super agro and have been known to burn kites in car parks, rape dogs if there tied up and steal little kids boogie boards. just be careful cause this one time i was there i did a front mobe kite loop 9 in front of this dude and he went nuts saying i was a show pony and i should get my little rubber booties out of there befor he jammed my board up my bum bum sideways. i may have exaggerated the story a little but he was definitely upset and had a thick accent.

All great advice... looks like kiters in Australia are as easy going as the kiters here in Canada.
I did find the http://www.kbv.org.au/ link the other day. Some good info on there. I also found some info on kitebeach.com or something like that... affliated with kiteforum.com, TONNES of stuff on there, not sure if anyone from on here goest here or not (NOT plugging another forum...).
Manicskier, I'll def fire you a PM, sounds ideal!
As for the trouble spot... I have NO idea where that is, but hope I don't find out the hard way!
Macca, as for the name, I'm not sure exactly where my folks dug it up, but I'm assuming it's Scottish/British in nature. I've only met one other and it was a female, spelled BrydOn though...

Peace,

Hi all!

I'm also quite new to Melbourne and would love to join some other kiters here. Will somebody kite on Altona Beach on Tuesday afternoon or somewhere else? Should be good weather and the forecast is about Northerlies (offshore). I won't kite there alone, so is there anybody else?

Looking forward to see some of you! My number is 0431371188!

As much as I would love to get out for a kite on Tuesday I will be working. I guess that is the problem around here in Winter - AWESOME wind during the week and the relatively windless weekends (Although there was enough wind for about an hour at Rye on Saturday).

The forecasted northerlies for Tuesday will be offshore at Altona. To kite the northerlies some people head to Brighton - whilst others head to the other side of the bay - either Point Henry or Rye.

Go to kbv.org website (as posted earlier on this thread)for where to kite in either of these places.

Hey matto,

thanks for the advices. I noticed that in Altona there only few metres of shallow water, so I won't go there in this wind. Unfortunately Rye is too far away (I don't have a car yet, poor overseas student ;-), but weekend seems to be nice for the westerlies spots.

Will anybody be there?

Andi83 - kiting offshore is dumb - so dont try it. In Melb the northerly hits the bay after coming through the buildings & suburbs of Melb...its gusty and full of holes. Thats why we drive an hour or more out of our way to go to a sideshore spot like Rosebud or Pt Henry.

Westerly at Altona is also asking for trouble - wind comes off the land so its also gusty & unpredictable.

Altona works in ESE through S. Anything with west in it is crap.

Altona is also lagoons that are tidal and range from a few cm to knee deep - fantastic flat water kiting in a honking seabreeze.

@Plow: yeah, i've already realized that its crap to go to Altona on northerlies. And westerlies spots I mean beaches on the east side of the bay like St. Kilda... But thanks for that!

Anyway, where I'm from we only have gusty winds, so it will be the paradise for me here ;-)

Anybody going to St. Kilda on Saturday?

Cheers!

Luckily it was blowing in Rye (3rd time lucky)
