Just saw an article in the Port Philip News. The City of Port Philip is proposing a bike path to be constructed from next April.

This looks as though it will essentially cut off most of the access/beach space which we currently have.

Is there anything we can do to stop this??

Matto,

Before starting to worry (and create waves), did you see the plans?, How the bike path will take so much space from the beach? How it will cut access to the beach?
To my knowledge in Middle Brighton we have already a bike path; however the access to the beach is un-obstructed.
Why we have to interpret everything the City Councils are doing as being targeting "our access to the beach" or "our beach space".
We have to have a little bit more positive attitude and try to be more cooperative with the Councils and other users of the beach.
Only good communication, understanding, mutual respect and observance of local rules and regulations, can lead to us being accepted as "equal partners" in what may be a revolutionary brake trough in our Public Relations.
We have to work hard at this stage to fix past years mistakes, which projected a not so good light on our sport.

Good luck and let’s be safe the next summer.

Regards

They will be closing the road and where that was they are putting in a bike and walking path, nothing to do with the beach.
It will mean that you won't be able to drive close to that beach, no big deal.
We have Council, Parks and Marine safety's permission to use that whole area for Kitboarding.
If it means we have to walk 100m so be it, it isn't like we have to carry a windsurfer or a piano.

Is there any info online for the article?

It wont make that much difference if they close the road, you can still park at the main beach and as it is usually the advanced riders who use the other area so they can start at the main beach and go upwind to the other area.

Spot on Snowman !!!!! It's no big deal to launch on the sand bar and make your way upwind.......beats launching in all the plastic refuse near the rocks when the tide's up anyway. On a positive note...the council might spend more on cleaning that crap up if they are attracting more tourists etc to the area with the bike track. Let's hope so. Can always park outside the Beaccy Pub and have a schooner on the way back to the car....and remember Hookesy.

How close do the trams stop to St Kilda beach where they kite? I am moving to Melbourne next week and I won't have access to a car for a little while.

Get off the St.Kilda tram at Cowderoy Street (stop 114 I think) and from there it's 100m to the pub or 200m to the launch area....EASY AS !!!!!! Trams about every 20 mins. Make sure you put your board in a bag or the conductors can get a little narky.....
Cheers

Thanks for the advice. At least I know not to strap my board to my backpack kitebag.

Got a golf style bag that takes my kite (only 1), board, harness, wetsuit etc so I will make sure I use that.

When does the summer (less gusty) wind start to kick in?

October through April is the best. Wait for the Northwesterlies to end. Any Squalls forecast give it a miss.

@ St Kite... Piano - I find that quite amusing, at least I am more use on one of those than a windsurfer!

Matto, last time I looked there were plans posted just behind the beach kiosk - From what I remember, only the road around the sea-side of the Catani Gardens will be affected. There is also a plan to develop the building that between the 2 beaches.

One issue with the development of the St Kilda Kitebeach area is an increase in non-kiters using the beach - perhaps even people swimming?! (without kites!) This means that all kiters will need to continue to be vigilant when on/near the beach and hopefully Joe public will have no reason to complain.

I don't think people swimming in that part of the beach is much of a problem. It is and will no doubt continue to be 'no swimming designated boating zone.' Just a damn pain in the but that people do ignore the signs and swim in front of you just trying to get sliced up by a fin.

I say run em down, they'll only do it once...

Bad, bad attitude Soonee.
Swimmers were on the beach way before even I started playing with kites.
So they will always have the right to be on the beach.
The answer to their annoyiance will be to kitesurf at a safe distance from the shore (you don't have to jump meters from the beach to be noticed)

Cheers

I just moved a month ago to a flat right on The Esplanade, next door to the Espy Hotel. I was very selective in finding the right living location....

But where is the kiting? Is it to the (looking out to sea) right of the marina/harbour? What about in front of the St. Kilda Seabaths, between the two jetties, is it allowed to kite there too?

One month here, and not a single kite out since.... Bring on the summer damn it.

Cool - I noticed there's a big sandbar spit that sticks out right in front of the boats, can you launch there and head a bit downwind to clear the harbour? Trying to minimise my walking time from home (lazy me).

Cheers thanks for the "inspiration", two months to go!

Hi Steve, welcome to the area.

In front of the seabaths is a strictly 'No Kiting zone' even when we do our downwinders from Brighton we are reminded that we shoudl not be there so best to stay away.

There is plenty of rom on the right hand sid of the pier the way it usually goes is people setup and lauch on the main beach. The advanced riders head upwind (left looking at the water) next to the peir and amoung the boats - this has steedier wind and flatter water but everyone is doing tricks and jumps so pay attention. The intemediates go downwind a little to the right - can be choppy and a wind hole that you soon figure out and the beginners stay in the middle and float downwind and walk back.

Hope this helps - seabreezes will be here at the end of September ish!
