I know there are a few South African kiters on the forum, I'm interested in finding out if anyone has found a place inland near Jhb, Pretoria, Witbank etc to kite?
I know there is water, but is there wind and does it blow cross shore anywhere?

Haven't been back there for 7 years now so when I was last there kiting did not exist.

I know that people used to windsurf on Haartebeesport dam north of Pretoria and Vaal Dam about 60km south of JHB.

Good luck - I'm staying right here on the Sunshine Coast.

Hartebeespoort is a no go for kiting. Very gusty. Best spots are the vaal dam (only on a NE), Grootdraai (NE and nw) and Sterkfontein which will work in pretty much any wind direction but its a longer drive. Kiting only really happens around winter with the wind coming though before every cold front which is pretty much every weekend. Summer is pretty bad, so most people travel the 600km's to the coast for the odd weekend or do cable wakeboarding. You can PM me for local contact details of kiteboarders in JHB if you want. There is also a webpage I can refer you to but I don't think I can post websites on this forum.

I'm pretty sure there's no problem with posting a link to another similar forum, it's not commercial or anything. You can get to most of the local Johannesburg kite chat on xsport.co.za/ . But since someone called Tony posted there for the first time yesterday who I can only assume is you then it seems you've already found it.

Anyway looks like a few of us will head to the Vaal dam on Saturday morning, there's a chance of some kiteable wind.

Tx for the info Pat (and others). The Tony on the xsport forum is not me, however I have registered today as 'tonyB'. The reason I was after some info on inland kiting is because I am going over to SA (from Perth)between the 28th of Sep and 20th of Oct. I will be living in Witbank during this time.If I was sure of getting a kite in sometime during this time, I would take my gear. What do you think my chances are at the Witbank Dam during that time?
Thank's for your help.

That should still be okay. Inland wind dies around end October.
