Quick releases are OK and necessary but safety is directly related to the direction and type of wind.

Perfect sideshore wind is the ideal direction but it's rare to find.
Cross-off or offshore wind is problematic for many reasons.
So that leaves cross-on or direct onshore wind, the two most common conditions for kitesurfing.

And because of the 'onshore' element, it can be extremely dangerous,
because the rider can end up hitting the beach hard in the heavy gusts.
People will advise to stay well off shore in these onshore conditions,
but riders still need to launch and land on the shoreline.

Is kitesurfing just plain wrong ?

nope - it just means the spots are wrong. or the wind is wrong. or both are wrong.

What was the question?

After an impressive 967 posts on Sea Breeze, waveslave finally lost his edge.

'slave was last seen dribbling kiting inanities at a pretty blonde nurse as he was spoon fed vanilla flavoured, Wiggles-themed yoghurt at the Happy Breeze nursing home.

A malaysian man ( a former snakefarm worker) broke a guiness world record this week kissing a poisonous snake (4.7m long king cobra) 51 times in 3 minutes using inly his bare hands as protection, people thought he was crazy for doing it, his reply was

"You should know that if one persn has sufficient knowlage of reptiles, there would be no problem in dealing with them"

Onshore wind dangerous? hitting the beach in heavy gusts? not even...

i kite in onshore winds all the time. If i muff my launch the kite is on the road or through a roof. big deal who cares. just don't get the launch wrong.

I cannot for the life of me understand why people allways say you shouldn't kite in onshore winds. There is nothing dangerous about kiting in onshore winds. Absolutely nothing. Just get your launch right and know what you are doing. We jump all over the place and land right on the shoreline.. we even land on the beach on the odd occasion.

But yeah your right waveslave.. kiting is stupid but since i'm also stupid i seem to like doing stupid things.

Onshore winds and squalls... still no biggie, just know your limits and dump the bitch when you can sense it getting frisky. with a bow kite that is sooooooo easy.

At the risk of losing friends (too late)..the thing about kiting is that you normally go out with roughly the same amount of power - enoug hto get you up and going, and doing some jumps etc. Sometimes this means a big kite, sometimes a small kite.

Thing is, it is speed that hurts - hitting something at speed, rather than power. I'm not going to get into the physics here, but speed and power are pretty interchangable when you are heading for the rocks. SO my point is, stronger wind is always sketchier than lighter wind cos the kites move faster and enable you to get up more speed (upside down groping for the release). I start thinking hard about not going once it gets much over 30kts - (unless there is nothing downwind), cos those wee kites can really get one over you in a hurry (sardining backwards on an 8 meter Cabrihna is one of my all time fondest memories).

Just a thought that's all.

Agreed stnkygoat.....and it is all about perspective, crossing the road is risky, more risky than kiting I would bet.

So we are all dumb and doing domb things, unless we don't kite or cross roads.

Don't kite on the road children... just don't! The big people here are just being silly (except that Kiwi, he can't help it, they're all like that.)

The slave is right though, to bring our thoughts towards matters of common sense. Make the correct choice on where you kite and when. Drive the extra miles to get sideshore winds if you can.

Make the choice to kite right.

Fuly agree with Stinky about little kites, they always bite harder than big ones.

Hey man what's wrong with kiting on the road? Getting dragged over the road is cool. We could do ECK (Extreme Championship Kiting) where you have to kiteloop over barbed wire fences and ****. The dragged across the road/kite on rooflook is sooo now.. the sideshore water look is soooooo last month.

And for the boy who commented on the kiwi fella... we add a little extra spice in afterwards... see the sheep go nuts when i pull my double kiteloop handlepass faceplant asphalt road facial massage curb therapy bardwire castration move that ends with the old ladys front yard go thorugh house up chimney through the thronbushes followed by pissed off grandma with shotgun styles... tell ya mate after pullin one of those off the sheep will love ya... and there are 40 million of them to satisfy my fettish.. infact some woolly bitches are ready for some action right now .

As for the kangaroos........

"Blown Away" got his name from the state he was in after last years lambing season... The World has never seen so many orphaned lambs with a bad taste in their mouth.
