Using kites with an area up to nearly 30 square metres, the surfers ride on boards as short as 1.2 metres and reach speeds up to 30 knots.
30 m2?

The event is also an opportunity to test some of the latest designs, including a kite with a leading edge mimicking the lumpiness of a blue whale's fin.

They have 28m. I've seen that one.

I'll be joining them tomorrow. If there is a 30 i'd love to see it!

This is all about the public awareness of kiting after ,what? 5 years?

I think it will fade away !
Already noticing a drop in riders when its"on"

the whales turn and move faster through the water because of the lessened friction, caused by the turbulence of the lumps, on the face of their fins... similar to a golfball's dimples.

I was going to tape a heap of inflated condoms to my leading edge to test the out theory's aplication to LEI kites... but I had a big weekend and used them all at a party[}:)]... that and I couldn't find a launch secluded enough for the testing without being spotted. The shame of being forever known as the "Comdom Kiter" would be just to great of a burden to live with... I'm still getting over the goat fiasco from a university party so many years ago.
Oh Gawd! Please let the wind blow...

saw the lumpy blue whale test flight a few days back.
very very wierd
It was a 14M proto flying on the beach in about 6/7 kts.
Had a bit of a tutorial from the kite designer on the background theory & it sounds like an idea well worth investigating - & thats exactly what monkeykites are doing
Interesting !
