Is there some sort of protocol or etiquette that must be used when kite - surfing near surfers?

I generally give them right of way even if I am on the inside.
If I am on a down-winder, I skip past the peaks they are surfing although I might sneak a wave if no one is on it or paddling for it.

When I surf, I spew when anything that can catch a wave easier than me comes anywhere near.

Good question. I'd do the same. Surfers need be in the right place at the right time. So if they are on a wave or paddling for one, then let them have it.

sounds like you've got the right idea. In general, I follow the rules of:

- Those that were there first get right of way on the beach (surfers, fishies, windsurfers etc)

- Those that are more agile should make way for those that can't (i.e. we should avoid surfers, rather than the other way round).

Especially on a downwinder, we can always hit the next peak.

If surfers choose to come down and get in the water in the middle of 15 kiters having a session though, and I'm session kiting and not doing a downwinder, I'll still go out my way to avoid them but I won't be giving up any waves for their cause.

20 knot onshore surfs are highly memorable ... you mostly remember not to go again in onshore like that mostly

Rule #1 - Don't piss them off!
Rule #2 - see rule #1

But seriously...

As you can cherry pick the waves and get on waves way before the surfers try not to hog everything half decent.

Don't splash them and/or ride to close to them (on the way out especially)

Keeps your eyes open for surfers duck diving under waves (hint - if you dont see them before they submerge it's a bit like playing minesweeper)

Don't jump upwind and/or over them

Most of all if you look out of control and kooky anywhere near them they will get grumpy.

Being a surfer and kiter it's a good idea to say "Hi" to the surfers if you cruise by their break and let them know you'll stay out of their way. It makes for good public relations and they'll relax a bit more and not see us as a threat.

take special note of the 30 m rule .don't piss your local surfers off or they will be calling waterways and creating grief

I don't think any of these rules take into account if the kitesurfer is there first.
(or powerboat etc)

Is there any rule that states swimmers or surfers should not go near kitesurfers?

As a young Queenslander, I ventured up and down the east coast even south the boarder to the Icy wastelands of NSW in search of Venereal Disease the ultimate chunder and the occasional wave. Then later in life when I re-dicovered surfing all the locals called me a Briso and promptly paddled onto every wave I pursued. Disheartened I was wondering when I would catch my next wave.
Then came Kitesurfing…. I dreamt of the day I could fly through a mob of local surfers, totally overpowered, skating out of control, screaming get out my way I’m a learner…. And now I can kite. Where did all the surfers go

Susan please come back it was only a rash.

Your right on the money kiter. Say hi, smile, and give the surfers some room and respect. You'll be welcome at any wind blown break with that attitude.

We have to remember, that for the most part at least, kiters in the surf are not going to impress hardcore surfers for a long time yet. This is especially true if we are trying to do lame ar5e jumps over, or spaying, them on the way out.

Get out there in the waves and have some fun. Respect those that we are trying to emulate, and remember that we can catch more waves in 15 minutes than a surfer will get in an average 2 hour session.

yes there is .it is the rule of commonse sense, one would think that if there is a group of kiters kiting in one spot and there were no swimmers or surfers there they would go somewhere that didn't have such intense activity (yes just down the beach a bit ,but no they will just paddle out and call waterways on ya if ya get within 30 m) .But there aint much of that anymore with 'the majority' .they have inalieable rights don't they .We are a minority and must learn to live in a world paranoid about anything that isn't 'normal .In this communities eyes they were here first and we were here last and we must make way for them. (I'm talking in general not who arrived first at a spot on the beach)I hope this makes sense .

now on the up side Fortunately the 'minority '(kiters) here had alot of heat from a paranoid board riders club on city beaches a cupla years ago here who were calling waterways in very 5 mins .They checked out what was going on and local kiters called them as well because we were aware of the shenanigans .Waterways came down to check out what was going on a few times and coould see that it was a storm in a tea cup .Plus there is pretty good communication amongst kiters to not piss surfers off .
Yes there are a cupla other things too .the main kite beach only has kiters and poleys on NE summer winds and the next one isn't that good anyway for wind alot of the time and if its windy there aren't too many surfers out anyway
