Just went out on a TT skimboard (Nemo Medium) and just wanted to share my thoughts.
Went out in shallow water with a 14m Vegas in 6-8 knots of wind and HELD GROUND. I'm not sure about the physics involved, but for some reason when you're on a skimboard (finless, strapless) you create so little resistance you can be motoring along at half the wind strength you need to be cruising along on a normal TT kiteboard of the same size.
I found that if the kite could fly, then skimboarding was possible, albiet when it dropped to 5 knots it was downwind.
A great little tool to keep in your boardbag if your heart is set on kiting and the wind won't co-operate. It's amazing how much fun a little bit of wood can bring into your life.

did you find it generally easy to use?
i been thinkin bout one of these but not sure whether to go the skimboard or the surfboard.
the bonus of the skimboard is they are short.....

I've been playing around on a skimboard for a while now, there a
sh!t load of fun. You can basically do all boardflips like a skateboard, gap swell to swell but once you start to ride waves you need to be so confident in you board skills. Once the waves get over 4-5 feet they are hopless.

I'd reccomend the nemo tt - $150 5 ply marine wood with some kind of slick plasticised coating on the bottom. My only gripe is the dark colour on the top - I lost my first board on my first session because it blended in with the murky water. Best to put something on the top that helps it be spotted in the water. $150 doesn't sound like much for a board, but at the end of the day, it's just a bit of wood. Still a bit of wood that will get you out on the water when everyone else is still on shore and just skite-surfing.

Has anybody here heard of Victoria skimboards?? I´ve got a pricelist here from work and the boards look pretty nice. Bit of a difference in price though. $99 for a wood board and $550 for a carbon epoxy vac board. www.vicskimaus.com if anyone wants to check them out. I saw the woody which didn´t seem like anything special but their Epoxy Foamie board looked nice and light... Has anybody had any experience with these for kiting??

yeah these skimmies kick ass... I used to skimboard and Victoria makes some really good skimboards! Dunno how they ride on the water but they are a big brand in skimming!
So it shouldn't be too bad!

yeah its fun riding strapless in 8knots.. I go out on my surfboard mostly but they're too heavy to do flips! skimboards sound like a good.cheap version of a wakeskate

I have a twin tip wooden, and there's no surf in Cairns - I use it for flat water mucking around. I think the directionals or rounded back boards are better for surf. If you're tossing up between a surfboard or a skimboard, then the question should answer itself - if you're into waves get a surfboard. If you prefer flat water kiting in light winds, get a skimmy.
Right now with a cat 4 cyclone sitting above us, I reckon I could stay upwind with a hanky - 120 knots at the centre. Yee ouch. Forecast for wed is 35-50 knots. Certainly not skimboard weather.

been riding a bodyboard in light wind for a while, like you say if the kite flys your in business and you truck upwind, really only any good in the flats. Release the edge even in the lightest wind and it's skimboarding without the effort, getting better at kickfilping the thing to turn. I had more fun and injuries on that thing than my full on wakeboard. Had a go on a skimboard the other day, they have potential, but a wakeskate board only costs $150 to $200 why stuff around. Have a look at(www.macs.com.au). Use what you've got, have some fun with the sport I think it's got way to serious over the years and get into wakeskate, getting one this week. With a 12m kite and a body board I can get out in the water when no one can, who the hell can be stuffed pumping up a 20m kite for a 30min lull, wheres the fun in that!

I bought a wakeskate, at about 41 inches I guess that about 100cm on a board that barely floats you pushing it, but it does work if your up for a challenge. You have to do a moving start, and jump on the board. Runners kept me glued to the board till the 25knt gusts hit , proved it can be done, held ground and upwind till I stuff up, but only recomended it if your really bored with the sport. The bodyboard remains the light wind , boredom breaker.
