I've just been told no kiting for 6-8 weeks after a grade 2/3 tear on my medial colateral ligament (The inside the knee one). Pretty pissed as I only just bought a couple of new kites!

I've seen a few guys wearing knee braces kiting. I'd appreciate any advice from anybody who has used one to kite - as the stresses on the knees must be a bit unique compared to other sport.

What works, what doesn't and will I have to sell a kite to buy one?

Go to Wing Wetsuits at Taren Point 100 bucks will get you a pretty descent knee brace, been wearing mine now for 12 months and its helped alot.

Or you can go and spend 800 bucks and then you might have to sell a kite.

Hi Smasher,
A knee brace will stabilize lateral movement of the knee. It will not take any axial pressure.
If I'd be in your place, I would cosult an orthoped.
I've smashed my lateral ankle ligament in a motorcycle accident four weeks ago, I am buggered (like you) for at least another 4 weeks. The orthoped removed one week ago the plaster and fitted a CAM boot, I can walk now, but if I push too hard, it hurts like hell. I cannot even push the clutch pedal on a manual car!
I know it is frustrating, but you have to let your boddy heal the knee.

Good luck

silviu, mate, why would you ride a motorbike when a car is much safer?
by your logic it is dangerous and irresponsible to do something when there is a safer alternative. i dont understand why you were on the road in anything but a volvo. mate.

Hey Smasher, I've been off the water since March due to a busted knee. I got a custom made CTI2 for when i get back on the water in January. I've been wearing it to physio and when i go to the gym to work on my knee and it makes it feel 100% more solid, it's a rigid carbon fibre thing with titanium hinges and crap, cost $1100 but when you consider the price of that to another year off the water it's not too bad.

And by the way, I've got a new quiver of kites been used about 10 times (one only about twice) and a new board and bindings I haven't had a chance to use at all but I'll be stoked when i get back out there in a few months

'couse it is fun and exhilarating. And I am wearing, full gear, the fact that I have only the ankle smashed, after comming of my motobike at 60km/hour, tumbling trough the air and landing on my feet, before skiding about 10 m on the bitumen on my right side, demonstrate how safe is to have proper protection and good luck (there were no other cars behind me).
However, there are so many mongrels on the road driving cars (like volvo), talking on the mobile phones while driving.
Thats my story mate!
Hit and run!
The bloody bastard did not have the decency to stop, to see if I am OK or not.

Get a custom knee brace made and fitted at certain clinics. It is expensive but we're talking about your knees...you use them all the time.
Try these links out. If you have been advised to not kite for awhile...probably a good idea not to or just get that operation over and done with asap. Stay out of chop and stay in flat deeper water.

I'd say you're looking at $800+ for QUALITY

that is really low, did you get his number plate?
you ride roadbikes for the same reasons as me; fun, exhilarating, sense of freedom. some people get the same rush from pushing the limits when kiting. they could ride around just going upwind and doing nothing new (like a volvo driver) or they could challenge themselves (like a motorbike rider).
i dont care if you want to kite like a volvo driver or kite like a wa***er on a honda fairyblade in thongs and a singlet; its your choice.
do you see the analogy silviu?
you cant encourage people to kite like volvo drivers just because thats the way you kite, just like no one should tell you to stop riding motorbikes and get in a car because they think bikes are dangerous.

Smasher....doing a MCL means you need to buy a kneebrace that only reinforces each side of the knee not one that prevents hyper-extension of the knee joint.... See a sports physio or a good GP that has a diploma in sports medicine.
Ligaments in the knee are bad news.... If you completely tear a ligament the thing actually dies...It grows OK then is weakest at about 9-12months into recovery.
2 main types: Colateral ligaments keep the knee stabilized so it doesnt wobble in the joint
Cruciate ligaments: stabilize the knee during flexion/extension/hyperextension. they crisscross each other inside the knee.
Both operations usually involve cutting a piece of your hamstrings to make a new ligament...Hard core

Smasher,

I think you will have to see an orthotist or a prosthetist which is specialised in sport.
I've seen somone using a very expensive knee brace, for motorcyclists!
All carbon fibre and titanium, however not designed for walking or to be deeped in salt water.
1500 dolars busted in less the one month as the brace literally desintegrated, causing more damage to the knee.
So for your sake, take it serious.
Good luck,

Silviu

Thanks for all the info guys. Only did it 10 days ago so will talk with the ortho surgeon on Thurs. Just wanted to be armed with a bit of practical knowledge as I don't want to spend $1000 on something that will fall apart in the water after a few months. If I can't use it to kite then it's not worth having!

Jeff that looks like the most awesome brace you can get. They also make an off the shelf version which is a bit cheaper so I might have a look at that if I can find one to fit my chicken legs. You must have mangled your leg dude! Hope it gets better quickly - nothing worse than watching summer and the sea breezes come in while the new toys sit in the garage.

Silviu - That sucks mate lucky you were wearing the good gear. Thanks for the info - I hope you are back on the water soon

I did a grade 2 tear on my MCL in June. I was off for 5 weeks before I kited again, then no jumping and no overpowered riding. by august it was 100% kiting. only gets a bit sore after hitting lots of whitewater or big day of overpowered riding.

not using a brace just lots of bike riding and gym work and yoga really helped.

Hey Jeff where did you get that knee brace , and how long will it last while you wear it kiting.

The Knee popped yesterday on the water coming down from a jump although the brace Im wearing stopped the knee from giving way alot more , I need something that stops it totally.

I had the op you had and after 10 years the knee starts to get a bit wobbily when under alot of pressure, although the op has helped alot the knee is never like it used to be.

Hew Danza, I'm getting one of those CT1 braces like Jeffs, should be at the shop within a week or so.
Definitely follow the advice of your surgeon!
I think a good brace will help on the water, these ones that Gall bros sell are waterproof.
My problem is worn out knee caused by a torn acl that was never repaired 27 years ago, now I have a fairly unstable knee and worn cartillage, getting painful clicks when I gybe or change pressure from one leg to the other.
Arthritis has formed in the joint due to bone on bone action in there, and the extension of the knee is now limited, so am going for a brace that will prevent over extension, which really really hurts!

This sport is hard on knees, one of my customers is an knee surgeon, good guy and surgeon if you need one in the Sydney area.

Cya and

Goodwinds

I know this dood and he is a nerdy type with crazy white hair and a moustach that messes with beakers and stuff, I told him your story and he said:

"Smasher: Kitesurfer. A man barely alive. We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better...stronger...faster."

Only problem is it costs 6 million bucks. If we pass the hat around Doll's we may get close!!!

Thanks Coxy - Just been down to Orthosynergy with the specs from the Physio and Ortho. Mark brought down 7 different braces to try. Theoretically any one of them would do the job but nothing beats actually trying them on.

Danza they are on the east side of Paraweena Rd right down the end next to AAMI. Mark is really helpful and has a full range from $100 to $Sell you car.

Back on the water in no time
