G'day,

just wondering if anyone kites with a knee brace, like those ones similar to the moto-x ones. last week at work i damaged my knee by hyperextending it (bent the wrong way), and it looks like a sh1t summer if i cant kitesurf.

i have seen knee braces that have a lock that can limit the movement, so in theory i should be able to lock out when the knee gets to fully extended, or fully retracted, therefor avoiding the painfull areas.

Now i can walk on it, run on it (just) and the only time it collapses is when its fully extended, this is due to pain mainly. apparently the knee just needs time for the ligaments to heal and then its fine.

so i guess i am askin is, does anyone kite with a knee brace?

thanks for reading, any help will be much appreciated.

Dave.

One of the guys I kite with had a major knee blowout last summer. Surgery to correct etc. When it was healed enough, he was back in the water with a brace on and managed fine.

Guy at Altona has got permanent hyper extending knees from moto X - he wears knee braces wrapped up with gaffa tape every time he goes out.

Bl**dy good kiter tho.

Sheppo -

Blew my knee (3degree MCL tear) in March skiing. Took a good 6wks of physio to get back up skiing, but what helped was a Don Joy knee brace. Physios will be able to source them and reccomend models.

Mine has adjustments to limit the extension from 30degrees down to 5 degrees. They are EXCELLENT but expensive.

Just had a knee reco 3 wks ago, so will be using the Don Joy again for kiting, as they are waterproof. Physio is the key mate, good luck.

Having already had a knee recon im wondering if knee's are a common kiting injury.

I tend to hear more about broken ribs and bad shoulders.

i actually gave up competition slalom skiing and snowboarding a few years ago due to the impact on ma knees, and thought that as long as i didnt do the sports the doc said NOT to do (aka skiing and snowboarding) i'd be fine. mmm 3 years of moto-x and now kitesurfing, i think i am just giving the knees hell again, meh.

good news is ma knee is getting better, can walk and run comfortably now, just gotta avoid 100% extension and its fine.

i will look into the knee brace this next few days.

thanks

Theres some exercies you can do. I dont know em all but i think one is stand against the wall and then lower yourself. Hard to explain and i cbf finding some pictures of it. The point is strengthen your knees and you will be less suceptible.
