I saw this topic ages ago but can't find it in the archives. Whats the best and easiest way to get knots out of lines without damaging them? Discovered a couple setting up and then flew my kite for a couple of hours. They are tighter than a ducks arse.

should have undone them when you first saw them, would have been a lot easier. I think patience, a stress ball and a 6 pack would be a good start. Or, this might sound rediculous, mothers and grandmothers are very good at this stuff, i don't know why, but they are.

I've got to ask the question, if you noticed the knots when you where setting up why didn't you remove them before you went for a kite. I know it takes a while some times but a knot can reduce the strength of line by up to 30%.

There's a couple way to remove them using your fingernails and working at it for a while. You can use pliers but it’s not very good for the line.

I got a knot out successfully with thickish needle and dish washing detergent as a lubricant. You have to take it slow and be careful only to work the needle in between the lines. If it is too tight and the knot is near an end, you could get the lines chopped and new loops sewn on by a professional.

I noticed them when I was attaching the lines to my kite at the end of a sandbar. Tried for about ten minutes with my nails and then headed out. Didn't want to miss out. Cheers for the advice. Might go and give them a chew and if that doesn't work I will see me mother.

Hi Kahuna,

Harks 98 is pretty much on the ball. Put the knotted string in your mouth and wet the knot thoroughly with saliva and gently chew the knot, turning it over and over in between your teeth. This usually works and helps if you have some fingernails to start to pull the knot apart once you loosen it with the chewing.

Another method is similar but requires no chewing. Simply wet the knot with spit or a little soapy water and place on a hard smooth surface, then gently tap the knot with a ball pein hammer (ie the smooth rounded end of the hammer) until it begins to loosen up. The rest is histoty!

Any knot can be removed with patience and determination. Good luck!

Good winds,

You don't have to chew or use spit, an overnight soak in water works even better. And tapping it, like Kitehard said is heaps better than pins and stuff, which can damage the lines.

Hey Kahuna. I think Dave... is the authority on this topic he managed to Chew the knots out on my set up. Not bad for $50 p/h! By the way knots reduce line strength by up to 50% so get it sorted before you fly next.
