Hey guys

Are Hammer head sharks known to be dangourous to humans?

We were out today in a boat and spotted a pack of half dozen or so all about 6foot south of Pulbah Island in Lake Macquarie

Imagine seeing that on the front page of the local paper tomorrow with the holidays in full swing

Suck it up kid

Sharks are everywhere

Human are scared idiots

Everything is in balance

Maybe you should give up water sports if ya scared of sharks

But leave packs alone, then we don't piss them off, and they don't us, harmony

Now stop listening to the media beat-ups

Stats - look at sharks verses bees, hippos, trees, coconuts etc, now are you scared of coconuts too?

Haha, hope this didn't come across too angry

Last time I checked hammerheads were 4th or so on the list of sharks responsible for shark attacks.

I will take that as a compliment since I am nearly twice your age
And I am about the opposite to the person you aim the reply at

Never mentioned I was scared at all, in fact went kiting at the entrance to the lake half hour later

Just after an answer to my question

I was even thinking of contacting the local paper as I reckon they would be interested.

I reckon I could get them to donate some money to the local volunteer coastal patrol or westpac rescue chopper for a copy of the pics.

Although I am not sure it would be a good idea to scare the visitors to the lake at this time of year.
it sure would get a lot of people talking around the campsites though

Good to hear then

I meant kid as the my perceived view on your first post indicated a lack of knowledge and immature fear of sharks

So there you go I made you younger, happy? Hehe

Seems i've read this wrong, easy on this medium, I take it back

Keep the shark stories down but, those poor buggers

Hope you had a good breeze

Hey LotofWind

Park Beach (Coffs) was good today, think heading there again tomorrow (bit like flattop in a good blow)

What was the swell like at flattop today and what will it be like next few days/week, any ideas?

I still need small swell as beginning, some good fun blasts (even if short) and waterstarting today with 4ws and 3kites

Definately wanna get up flatop soon (windy and low swell and free time - i'm there), prob not tommorrow but busy either side of my sailing window

Should get a crew together for a good forecast and have a bbq and beers after, keen?

Will catch you up there soon

p.s. Swoosh will be there prob www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=45220

My info is from the documentary film "Sharkwater" (highly recommended). According to this film as I can remember there is no evidence whatsoever, that hammerheads have ever attacked humans. In fact they are very shy creatures, so we know very little about them.
This scare campaign is great for the multibillion dollar businesses on shark fins, which in the process of making the big bucks also make sharks extinct.....just another dark age.

According to the international shark files, an institute responsible for keeping stats relating to sharks and shark attacks, the hammerhead is ranked 6th on the list of most dangerous sharks.

"Hammerheads are considered potentially dangerous sharks. According to the International Shark Attack File, there have been 21 unprovoked attacks with 2 resulting in fatalities for all species of the genus Sphyrna. However, few if any attacks can be directly linked with this species due to the difficulty distinguishing species of hammerheads involved in attacks. Due to its large size and variety of prey, this shark should be treated with respect and caution."

Just down the road at Nth Entrance in peak season you see at least one HH almost every session , Big and small. Noone has been nibbled on though in 25 years of windsurfing/kitesurfing, the BIGGEST sharks ive ever seen were hammers and they were BIG , While sailing close to the shore at Stockton beach

The Grey Nurse is also considered a Potentially Dangerous shark which is ridiculous as they are like puppy dogs. Any shark with teeth is going to be clasified as dangerous to cover the authors arse.

Hammerheads are pretty chilled sharks. Man is not on their menu so you have nothing to worry about unless you are bleeding profusely and badly injured.

The only real sharks you need to be wary of are GWS, Mako and maybe Tigers. Bullies are troublesome too!

Good winds,

dont trust any shark!!!

i was attacked by a grey nurse a few years ago ,grabed my fin and gave it a large shake[not a friendly puppy dog]
the most dangerous of hammerheads is the greater hammerhead which is extreamly dangerous .it lives in open water in the tropics so you won`t see one at lake macquarie.
my attack was only one in 20 years of spear fishing and thousands of hours of water time i worry more about being hit by a car than sharks

Statistically you have more chance of being killed by a vending machine falling on you than by shark attack. Give you one guess what country is responsible for the large number of vending maching deaths.

I was swimming in one day a few years back after a pretty successful spear fish.. and a 4ft wobby grabbed my fish net that was tied to me. after a few minutes of tug of war i had to let him take them because he was dragging me out to sea. very powerful fish

I was out at Diamond Head on Oahu in the late 80's and looked down and saw a hammerhead underneath me at least twice as long as my board - came in straight afterwards and was talking to some locals who said that 'hammer' was well known at Diamond Head and had never caused any harm.

Go and see the movie 'Sharkwater' - highly recommended!

Come ride at Stockton Rick, you will soon get over the fear for sharks, heaps of small/baby hammerheads. Soon as they see you they run, wouldn't be worried about them one bit.

NO fear at all
Just amazed at the sight of a pack of sharks in the lake
Having lived on the lake all my life I have never seen a shark in the lake let alone a pack of them.
I am sure this is a once in a life time sighting and I am sure there has been no other such sighting in my time that I have heard about.

I have been to fraser and haven't seen a shark
Been to the cape and never seen a crock in the wild
BUt to see a pack of sharks in my own back yard is a rare thing to have happen

Here are the pics of the pack of hammerheads in the lake on boxing day.

These guys were swimming along minding there own business doing whatever sharks do
They didn't even dissappear when we drove the boat through the middle of them

I added them to the post (they went into seabreeze gallery)
I can see them from my work computer (upload from home)

I did go back to my gallery and change the category from kitesurfing to fishing, I wonder if that stuffed things up a bit. Maybe they have to be approved by admin first

Yep thats the Town of Lake Maquarie.
Just south of Newcastle
I guess about 5 or 6 off them at about 5 or 6 foot

Here is the entrance to the lake were a few of us fequent on a run out tide and a NE breeze.
http://www.coastalwatch.com/camera/cameras_large.aspx?cam=2920&state=NSW&t=12:27:02%20PM&camName=Swansea
For the most part I was there for about 3 hrs all by myself yesterday arvo
nice little wave and the out going tide make for quick trips upwind and you can use a smaller kite.
A few of the local crew have seen the odd on while kiting here

you have prob seen on the news, my mate got attacked by a bull shark under windang bridge while snorkelling. he's allright but it's still a little disturbing happening in the lake but it was bound to happen one day.

yesterday on the radio a shark expert was talking about this incident and others and hammerheads were brought up. Apparently not one person has been killed by a hammerhead shark worldwide.
