The FLUMP(Lancelin foreshore plan) www.gingin.wa.gov.au/ has come out with some adverse recommendations for kites - all kiting to be done at the extreme north end of the bay, yet to see if it is inforced.

This adds to the ban of kiting activities on the grassed area at mainbreak due to a number of dangereous incidents last season.

Thats a terrible place to kite. All kiters should keep away from there.

(I'm assuming you're talking about the point directly opposite the northern island?)

It's actually my preffered location, although dodging cray boats can be a bit nasty.

In previous times I have kited right out front of the point... The place where you can drop your car/4wd on the beach to the south of the grassed area... "flat section"

Is this place out of bounds to kiters ?

brownee,

There's a sign on the fence near that grassed section (I have a photo somewhere, will dig it up and post if I can find it) which says no kiters.

My understanding of the current situation is that they don't want people rigging / launcing on or in front of the grass because there have been some fairly rough accidents and close calls in the area. You are allowed to walk further south to where you can drive down (or at least used to be able to - last I was there it had washed away) and launch from there.

I've actually been thinking about heading a bit further south near back beach, launching in the quiet and doing a nice big downwinder over the afternoon in the surf and flat...something for when the wind picks up again.

Yeah further south than the grassed area is where its nice and flat its too shallow for the windsurfers. A good couple of hundred meters away from the windsurfers run in and out of the bay...

Out front of the grassed area is a little too narrow for kiters to be launching. Have not seen the point this winter and it may very well have washed away. But in summer when theres sand on the point, I think that is the best place to rig up & launch...

Rusty cars would park 3 rows deep on the beach with room for an access track behind.

Lancelin had a wide, white sandy beach in the early sailing days.....
That was before the erosion happened.
There was no grassed area in those days.
There was no seaweed soup in the shoreline.
The clean water was ball-bearings on the inside flats and the crew sat on car bonnets checking out the carving euro-jibes snapped 10 metres in front of them.
It was freestyle and the sailors didn't even know it.
The vibe was good.
And the wave action never stopped on the outside reefs. Background noise.

The banning of any kind of sailing at this historic windsport venue would be unAustralian.
In summer, this spot is a full-on scene. Hollywind.
It should be heritage listed.
