Considering the move from sunny, windy perth to tassie next year. Have the option of going to either Launceston or Hobart, and don't really have strong opinions as to which one. So where's the best kiting to be had?

Luv shaping a career around the weather.

Will be sad to leave the sick seabreezes here.

Hobart is by far your best option

Reasons.

1. Hobart is situated in large inlet and you can kite in the river (its km wide) and gets a good seabreeze in summer and consistent westerlies in winter
Launceston is situated inland on a small river which you could not kite on and will have to travel 1+ hours to get anywhere to go kiting

2. Hobart is a fantastic town and excellent place to live
Launceston is a hole

3.
Hobart is near lots of surfing beaches on the east coast etc and these are also good kiting spots - catching the SW swells
Launceston is inland and youll need to travel a lot further to get waves etc

4. Hobart has a great windsurfing, kiting and surfing culture cause it has lots of local spots
Launceston does not

Thats all i need to say for now - just remember that Hobart is a brillinat vibrant city, and Launceston is not....

Sounds pretty convincing! Thanks for the input Loose Fin.

Have just learnt that Burnie might be an option too. Any thoughts about there?

Burnie is on the NW coast so gets OK wind and waves etc along that coast line

At Burnie however its preety industrial and a small town - imagine the port area of Freo for the typical coast near Burnie, so again youd have to travel a bit for kiting as its wharf and factories etc

It would be better than Launceston for kiting - not sure if any locals do it though ???

Burnie is a typical 30,000 population town on the coast surviving off forestry and industry,

not that attractive etc but not too bad.

Id pick Hobart if you have the choice for sure. Might get a bit bored in Burnie in winter time etc, as theres nothing to do when its cold

being an ex northwest coast Tasmanian... the winds in Tas are pretty bad compared to Perth. During summer they do have very light sea breezes on the north west, so make sure you have a huge kite, and a really small one for those very gusty roaring forties. Ive only been kiting off Ulverstone (close to 30K east of Burnie) but havent seen anyone else kite there.
