Like one which just got through this kitemare, and still "suffering succotash"

(just had my shoulder reconstruction surgery two weeks ago), I can tell you that does not quite make any difference, unless you are already in the water when you launch, and unless the water is deep enough and no rocks or other under water "obstacles". If the lines are tangled in the way the kite will get fully powered and fly through the middle of the window than crash on the other side of the window, you will probably end getting "splashed" on the sand or in shallow water.
Both "instances" are pretty un-pleasant: I ended with a dislocated shoulder and as a result two tendons were snatched from the bone - ouch

And all this happened in less than 3 seconds

, I did not have the chance to get my hand down to the QR - that’s frightening.

The best thing is to double check and avoid to get in the situation you loose contact with the ground, as whilst in the air, you have limited control on the kite.
That’s what I can gather from my "painful" experience.
