Hi Laurie,
I was wondering if it is possible to archive the days wind graphs?
I have only one season under the belt only kiting in the ocean and have been keen to check out the Perth river area over winter. Problem is too many coomitments and a lack of time.
If - say - the previous week or even day's winds were archived then I'd at least begin to understand the comings and goings a little better so I can time a reccy to suss a few spots out.
I know the chart predictions are as accurate as they can be but they seem wildly off lately.
Anybody else like to see a week of archives?

Checkout the "Yesterday" and "Last 7 Days" links at the left on the graphs page. "Last 30" as well, but they are averages, so probably not what you're fully after?

Apart from that, archival data is something that gets regularly asked for, and I'm keen to add it. Some folks believe that it's possible to compare week to week from year to year, but the weather isn't that consistent. Entire months can be windless one year, and cranking the next.

Things to remember about the forecasts is that as we approach winter, the wind is based around "gradient effects", not "thermal effects" as during summer. Checkout a short story at /info/wind.asp . The structure of an approaching cold front/gradient wind can change in a short space of time as things like high cells over the mainland become more dominant than the approaching system. The last front for WA, for example, was "stalled" in this manner, and then slid in a south easterly direction.

The contours of a synoptic chart are created from readings out to sea - if there aren't any vessels in the area reporting values, then the charts may not always be an accurate indication - the satellite images are also used to supplement the forecasting.

Never stop learning about the way weather works - especially in winter, make sure you look up and check the clouds - they can give a great indication of whether the forecast is panning out...the forecasts are updated every 6 hours, and a lot can happen in that time...

Would be great to hear other viewpoints...

Enjoy .. Lozzza

Thanks heaps Laurie,
I didn't notice these before.
Of course your'e right that they are no indication of what's coming but still useful for a newbie to digest.

Get in touch with the BOM here in Perth.
I recently got the Temp and Humidity readings for Karratha and Roebourne.
It cost $19.00 and they gave me readings for every hour, 24 hrs a day from current date back to 1993.
Great for planning a holiday and get the averages sorted.
We also did the same for the wind in Cocos last season to ensure we got enough and matched it with high tides etc.
That way we sailed mostly twice a day.
