The guys from Fatsands, who make the Progression learner DVD's and other movies like AC, have announced in a newsletter I just got that you can watch the Progression Begginer DVD from start to finish for free for the next 5 days from this website.

http://www.fatsand.com/webtv/

If you like it buy one from a good kitesurf store, you will learn heaps everytime you watch especially if you watch it before/after a practice kitesurf session.

It is by far the best learner DVD series I have ever seen, there are some OK other ones but they have tended to be either too brand specific, leave out large and important steps, don't use systems devised through hundreds of thousands of hours of IKO training sessions, etc, etc.

There is nothing missing on this DVD and only the info you need.

not so long ago steve you were crying about how "thrill ride kite lessons must be stopped" and now its ok to lear from a video?????WTF

is you shop one of those "good kitesurf store" where you can buy this DVD???

it might be a great DVD but no matter how good it is. its not substitute for a real lesson.
communication is a 2 way thing. so you cant "learn for free" cos you will pay the price somewhere down the line

It does not matter what you do, there will be always one or two, who will be not happy.
Hey Damo, do you believe you know everything?
Do you believe we don't have anything to learn or else from a video?
And, what's wrong with Kitepower promoting this DVD?
I found it very good, and I think it is a good promotion for the sport and for the safety.
Nobody says not to take lessons, I am against starting kitesurfing without proper tuition, however if you can watch the video before taking the lessons, that may help.
I think some of us are just a bunch of wingers, or some hidden agendas, who knows!
If it's free, it is not good; if it cost 50 bucks it is not good either.
Give me a break!
Could you guys stop winging, and start Kitesurfing?
Or stay home, it is winter now!

Have seen both fatsands teaching DVDs (beginner and rogressions) and would agree that they are by far the best kitesurfing DVDs out there (IMO). No substitute for a lesson but really once you've been taught the basic safety points you really need to get on with it in the water and watching a DVD again and again before and after is an excellent way to drum in the theory.

Hey Damo
Hows it goin?
Surely you can see there is a big difference between "thrill ride" type kite lessons, and someone determined to learn? My posts had nothing to do with crying, but a lot to do with promoting the sport in a sustainable manner, and not dumping a heap of over confident or simply underprepared one lesson wonders onto our beaches!

I never had a lesson, all the early days people never had lessons, flying a power kite is not rocket science. Sure there is an instructor industry, and I run a school, but I wish I could get every potential student to buy this DVD and watch before they turn up for a lesson, and then continue to watch it after or before every practice session.

Airborne Kitesurfing is the Australian distributor for the DVD, any kite shop can order it from them and sell it, Kitepower has been selling it for a long time, we used to import it ourselves.

Have you watched the DVD, does not sound like you have?

Beyond a couple of IKO based lessons there is not a lot an instructor can do for a person wanting to learn. Its like riding a bike, you need some pointers, need to know the rules, like how the safety works, how to self rescue, after that it is simply practice and persistence.

People need a kitesurfing friend or friends more than they need any more than a couple of real in the water lessons.

Regards,

I think what B/m is trying to say, is that outside of the instruction of parts: Lines, pigtails, safety releases, and or logistical and meteorological evaluations and considerations,,,

The instructor is incapable of much else; the kite is the real instructor.

So having a DVD although not nearly as good as a real person to interact with and question, is still enough to cover what an instructor can teach you.

In the end it’s time on the kite that gives you the instruction.

Deepwater of course is the place to make your learning mistakes.

In the end, it’s become increasingly clear paid instruction is a misnomer.

Assisted water time is the more accurate description of the service.

Happy Easter all

I had lessons like most people, but found that watching the DVD's was great extra information to watch for specifics, and also to get you prepared better for the lessons -

This is my first season kite surfing. I have had lessons with Darren which were invaluable. This DVD for me is also really good. I think they compliment each other.
