Hi all,

I am not kiting over the winter cause it is so cold here in Melbourne. But I only started last season and was really still getting the hang of it when I stoped, how much relearnign am I going to have to do at the start of the season or is it like riding a bike and going to be easy to pick up where I left off?

I really want summer to hurry up so I can get back into the water!!

Snowman, you will quickly pick up the basics again, but its the feel of flying the kite you will loose when you have long extended breaks.
You really should try to do a bit of flying in winter especially in melbourne as it has great noretherlys in the winter. Port Phillip bay is only 6 to 8 mtres deep on average and with a good wetsuit you shouldnt get to cold. A lot of St kilda kites head to Rye during the winter. Basically the closer you can keep your kiting outings together the faster you will improve. good luck.

Yea, Snowman, lind28 is right....fly baby fly...just go out and fly the FN kite, beats almost any other thing.

Do it with your eyes closed, while eating lunch

Did it work?
Hi have a 2/1 shorty and an 3/2 full and recokn that 5 would just about do it!! Probably can't move after that though! maybe just a rashy under the wetsuit will do?

Would buying a trainer kite for the winter months be a good idea or just a waste of money?

hey snowman, I spend alot of time in places alot colder than Melbourne (like -20C), so kiting for different conditions is my only option.

Summers on the water, winter in the snow and in between I use a Dirtsurfer with my old trainer kite. (4.5m little devil from ozone.)

With a few different styles of kites and toys to use with them the weather should not be a limiting factor. There are a multitude of different board styles to chose from but my new favourite is flexboardz.com

Check out the KGB (kite ground boarding) or landboarding sites around the net. There is a whole new kiting world just waiting for you.

I hear that the very first KGB park has just opened in England, so the sport is on the rise.

Go landboarding! Or yes, fly a Sport Kite (not a trainer kite), learn some kite 'tricks', lol. I know there is not really many places to landboard in Melbourne, but there are some - get up to the snow; or come down to Geelong.

Dont worry about the cold, we kitesurfed throuh a couple of welsh/English winters, 5mm should do the trick at the worst of times! Its the wind chill that will get you so cover yourself in vaseline and enjoy freezing your nads off.

If its windy get the tea bag in the air, aint donig no good in your garage, leave snow kiting to those poor sods who live in the mountains, why were ski lifts invented? Not for kitsurfing/skiing!

If its liquid and not ice you can kitesurf on it!

Regards
