Hey everyone,

There's been a few posts on here from people asking where to kite in westerlies around Sydney, and Kurnell has been mentioned a few times. I was down there today trying to kite in winds ranging from 10-30knots all within the space of an hour, and super gusty. In westerlies this is usually the case out there.
I noticed there were a few guys learning down there today bodydragging and getting up on the board. I had a talk to these guys, outlined the dangers, and made them aware of the situation. The guys I spoke to were all good blokes, and took into account what I had told them. By the time they went out the wind was only blowing around 10knots and I think they packed up when I left.
Should recommend this place as somewhere to learn how to kite. If it has any west in the wind you've either got rock groynes downwind, or mangroves and oyster leases. And no matter where you ride they're only about 50m downwind of where you launch.
Not to mention a guy fractured his skull here after being lofted in a gusty SW'er only a few months ago.

I'm not trying to be a old man about this but it's only gonna be a matter of time before somebody gets dragged into those rocks, cause not every learner is going to be as cautious as the guys who were out there today.

Wouldn't Boat Harbour be a better alternative in SW'ers? I'm not too sure about NW or W winds, but there has to be something better than Kurnell.

Cheers,
Jeff.

PS. I'm not saying this so I can have Kurnell to myself either, it was **** out there today, it is every westerly

Hey Jeff,

Nice to meet you today at Kurnell. Thanks a million for your advice. If it wasnt for you we probably would of ventured too far and experienced those Oyster leases. We got a couple of good runs body dragging in the shallows. For total noobs I agree that Kurnell is a no go spot.

I like to be really safe when going out, I wear a helmet,Impact vest. I dont hook in if it is gusty so I can just let go of my bar and not get lofted and dragged.

I am organising a mapping of all NSW kitesafe beaches for the NSWKBA. I would really appreciate some of your help in that particular area. If you could PM me your email details would be great. Try to keep the areas safe and not banned from use.

Being new to the sport I offer a different perspective to the dangers of the sport. Anyone new to the sport can go to our website and check out the details for certain beaches. It will list mainly safe wind directions to go out in and dangers in the area also a map with these dangers visualised so people can print it out and identify.

It would be good if we could organise a clean up day! Maybe on "Clean up Australia day")Ill check with the guys at NSWKBA what we could do. Especially when a guy I talked to a week ago out there stepped on a needle. I hope he is OK and doesnt get HIV or Hep C from it.

Thanks again,

Marcel

Harking back to the first post...is boat harbour on in a westerly? I like it there in 'normal' wind and I'd be keen to try it out if it's good....it's a pretty cool place, despite the fact that our last visit cost the bottom out from under the radiator....bumpy, isn't it.

Sydney in westerlies isn't a good place to learn.....however the best close to city is boat harbour otherwise for beginners I'd go upto Canton Beach and hour north of sydney, it's awesome, big enough for all levels and flat! Otherwise take a long weekend and head upto cairns where you'll get constant wind and what better excuse to get away for a weekend.

Where is boat harbour? Sounds like the place to go for a westerly.

Sorry Fli but I reckon Canton is just dangerous in a westerly for a beginner. I've been there twice and seen two bad accidents. I've heard it's not so bad when there's some south in it but I steer clear of the place.

Boat Harbour is right hand turn off Captain Cook Drive just before you hit Kurnell. It costs $15 to enter. I havent been there yet but in the next westerly I will. Kurnell is pretty polluted.

Today I saw a dead fox in the weeds, broken beer bottles, plastic bags, jagged old tin cans, logs with nails poking out.

Oh and a guy there 2 weeks ago got a syringe stuck in his foot when he stepped in the weeds.

I am going to go boat harbour until i get better. Kurnell is very dodgy if your a beginner.

Hey new to the sport crew.
There is no ideal spot in or around sydney in any sort of westerly.
It is hard to manage conditions to the Best of experienced riders as the local shops will point out. If you are keen to learn now a trainer is still your best option period. Kurnell is gusty as all hell at the best of times and boat harbour may be better but is still not ideal since the winds are gusty. Do yourselves a favour and study the sport as much as you can and fly your trainer and come back in the spring fit and ready to smash it in steady and predictable winds....instead of smashing yourself in the winter.
Thanks for bringing up the topic Jeff!

Hi Jeff,
Good on ya mate.
As for being a bit of an "old man" I wish all we old men could do horizontal kite loops at 20ft.
Rich has it spot on...there is nowhere safe in Sydney I know of for beginners (or even experts for that matter) in Sydney. The wind is gusty everywhere. Kurnell is very dangerous for beginners in westerlies. Usually you're going to get T-bagged down to the refinery or it the groins or have to walk back along the beach + road + power cables. Invariably you pull the emergency wrap up the kite and go home to untangle the mess. As for Boat in a westerly a) its still super gusty b)if you drop the kite and you're a beginner you will either have to get it out at 30 knots or 10. And you also stand a good chance of drifting out to the reef and that's a very unpleasant prospect.
Very occasionally the westerly can settle down and you can get out fine but always have a back up plan, kite away from the beach and make sure your safety works otherwise as Rich says get fit for spring and come back with a vengance.

Uber you were interested in sharks wern't you? massive Tiger caught in Port hacking a month ago.

Maybe we'll get kurnell to ourselves eventually Jeff?

Hey Marcel, sounds like a great idea. I don't know all the spots around Sydney as well as most of the other guys, but I'll help out however I can. It's good to see that some of the new guys like yourself are acknowledging that the sport can be pretty dangerous and taking it easy if the wind isn't looking good. Keep up the good work.
As for the syringes and garbage, I reckon it's all being blown in from Brighton with these NW'ers. The fox is probably ours though. I've lived in Kurnell my whole life and I've seen more syringes on the beach in the last week than I have seen in my life (I've seen 3 this week, only one before that ) but it's so feral. Makes you sick to think smackheads are shooting up somewhere nearby. Damn junkies.

Hey Alan, we can get Kurnell to ourselves pretty much every day of the week now. Sadly it's because nobody bothers anymore cause the winds so bad. Haven't seen you guys for ages now. We had a few super light NE'ers but hardly anything. Just enough to get wet. Bring on summer I reckon, well maybe once I get back from the snow

And thanks for the responses on this, hopefully we'll be able to figure something out for the new guys keen to do something in winter. I like the trainer idea Rich said, I think some guys are gonna be way too keen to stay doing that for another 3 months though, no matter how much you try and talk them out of it. Looks like Marcel might be on the right track too, even as something for new guys looking for places in summer. Anyway I'm off. See ya's.

PS. Marcel, my email is [email protected] just email me if you need any help mate. I'll be away for a few days but I'll talk to you when I get back. Try to involve some of the other guys here too cause they have alot of experience, and probably know of other places better than I do. I'm kinda confined to Kurnell and the beachies around here but willing to help however possible

Stay away from Kurnell in a Westerly or North-West and Yarra bay (the opposite side of Kurnell) on a southerly.

I have seen a lot of weird stuff at Kurnell, got lofted myself about 5m according to bystander. The gusts can be very sudden, the wind speed can vary by a lot between different areas, and I have had my kite fall off the sky and tangle on a power line (I think it was a rotor - air moving in a curcular pattern. Plus yhou have those 747 landing right overhead, in the right conditions they could cause sudden wind shifts.

I heard lots of people get lofted at Yarra and Frenchman Beach because the wind is pushed straight up by the beach dunes. Guess why there's always a guy on a hang glider hovering around on a southerly.

This last Saturday the Winds were pretty much NNW 15 to 24 at Kurnell. Heaps of people out and only one accident that I witnessed. I help launch a guy on on 12m Yarga and he made mistake of bringing it up over head where he got hit with a gust and oversteered and brought kite into loop. He ended up in the road with kite wrapped in tree with lines hanging over powerline. He was not hurt only some scrapes but he was drug between two parked cars and was sooo lucky that he did not hit them as he had no helmet.
Well all was well and he was able to reset up and get out on the water but it goes to show why straight onshore is trouble at Kurnell.

Hey Uber,

You should come over here and conquer your fear of sharks. That 6m great White I mentioned a month or so ago which hassled the surfers on the outer reefs of Perth, has been seen again up at the entrance to Hillarys boat harbour, or maybe it's another one..... Scared the s**t out of a mate of mine fishing fishing off the rocks, when it swam by close enough to touch with his fishing rod.

Hi Not on board,
I was there Sunday too but I missed the accident you're talking about.
Great day though, wind at last.
For beginners/intermediates like me If you can't resist going out, get out a few hundred metres stay clear of the good guys and groins.

Uber, what's your email address..I have pictures of your friendly tiger shark and the 7 guys hauling it up a slipway.....

Hey Alan,

Was that you who helped me the other day launch? I had the yellow 10mt SS and I was on the south side of the reserve? If it was Thanks again for your help and advice!

Yeah send me the pics of the sharkie! I have always been interested in these creatures, I just hope they dont take an interest in me when Im out teabagging in the sea!

I hear that the sharks in Sydney like to chase fish into the estuaries then feast on them when they are cornered. What is in Port Hacking? is it industrial?

Just click on my name and my email is there. (i would post it here but ive been getting heaps of spam mail from previous times)

Thanks Alan.

Hey Kitehard,

6mt Great White!!! Get $%@#$%3
I would love to go out your way. I havent been to Perth yet. Maybe when I get better I can head out that way. Can you give me a lesson.

I would like to learn a new move called "Sh!T!Sharkie!". This move entails a 10mt high 20mt long or more boost that will land close to saftety/beach. Must be able to land it flawlessly and before I crap myself with fear.

I will cheerfully kite anywhere once I learn that move. Lets hope that sharkie near you it isnt a jumping Seth Ifrikarn Great White migrating to Perth Check this out http://www.pushby.com/friends/jesse/archives/005721.html

Yeah, Sydney in a westerly is NOT the place to be learning to kite, unless you're just learning to fly the kite unhooked, so you can ditch the kite on a moment's notice if you have to. I wouldn't even recommend Boat Harbour in a westerly unless it's got a fair bit of South in it. I've seen a coupla nasty accidents there in the past coupla years even in relatively benign conditions with people getting gusted straight up over the dunes and into the bush. Best bet is either go somewhere in Q'Land or wait for summer. It's just too dangerous and there just aren't any places in the region that handle a westerly that have any significant amount of beach. Margin of error is just not worth risking it -- Kurnell especially. There have been lots more accidents there than most people are aware of. Oh, and just in case you're tempted, don't even THINK of trying the Pittwater side of Palm Beach in a westerly. Sheer madness. Robbo -- IKO Instructor...
