Just want to remind everyone that ALL sail craft are prohibited from the beach south of the railway overpass as of the 1st Oct each year (read the signs!). There were about 8-10 kites flying directly in front of the surf club on Sat. If we get banned I'll be really pissed...

Damn I didnt know that, cheers for the post. I've been kiting at port during the week because I can anchore my kite to the north facing fence for a safe unassisted landing BUT I havent dared kite at port during the weekend cause of the masses of people.

The safest stretch of beach at Leighton is the 250m just south of the overpass, north of the overpass is the crowded dog beach!! I'm sure this issue has come up before.

I think if you look closely at the signs in each parking area north of Leighton surf club that surf/sail craft are actually allowed at a point starting about 250m south of the overpass.

Hi,
Ta as well for the post. I am wondering if there are ny other no-go zones at northern beaches such as Scarbs, Brighton and the area between Brighton and Floreat beach?
I haven't seen much in the way of signs (yet) and obviously staying out of joe public's way is the go as well, but if any areas are strictly no-go please let myself and other newbies know.

Cheers

I forgot to ask if there is a marine and harbours or similar website that shows the zoning and seasons etc to keep outta trouble.

Cheers,

The only thing DPI have is at http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/imarine/rec_boating/rules.html

The problem is that there are so many different authorities that have jurisdiction:
  • DPI Marine Operations

  • DPI Fisheries

  • Swan River Trust

  • WA Police Service (Water Operations)

  • CALM (eg Woodies & Pelican Point)

  • All the different coastal city councils and town shires

The plan is that the WAKSA website will have site guides soon which will detail known restrictions; suitable wind directions; hazards; rating for beginners, intermediate or advanced kiters; etc. So if you know of any issues, restrictions and other useful info please email [email protected] so that it can go on the website.

While on the subject of restrictions Deano and others have published on this forum a number of times that you are NOT allowed to walk along the beach at Pelican Point East of the fence - you are permitted to walk and kite in the shallow water 50m off the beach. We will have problems with CALM if people keep disregarding this.

Cheers,
Ian Young

I drove past Port Beach and Leighton on Sunday. There were several kites flying at Port Beach. Obviously not everyone is reading these forums.

Another restriction to be aware of for those doing downwinders:

If the red flags are flying on Swanbourne Rifle range you must go out approx 3km offshore to stay out of the gazzetted "no go" area. I haven't been able to find a URL to show exactly where the "no go" area is but I believe it is in the general info section in the front of the Perth phone book.

I got down to Leighton late Sunday. It looked to me as though about 90% of the guys had moved down the beach. Well done

How come the NUDIES are still allowed on the beach when the red flags are up?

The nudists @ Swanny are actually out of the rifle range template - they must stay South of the flag tower near the beach when flags are up. The Army have a sentry in the tower to enforce it when shooting is in progress - sometimes they also have a boat out.

Bottom line is make sure people are aware of the restriction and don't piss them off or they will probably refer it to DPI and/or water police if it becomes a problem.

My foil will keep flying if they shoot it - don't think your LEI would do so well :-)

Certain questionable activities at Swanbourne are not to be confused with my purple van! hahaha

I agree with airhead, most the crew at leighton have moved down the beach.

i tried to do the right thing today and went to the dog beach just in front of the foot bridge. After inflating my kite, I began to sort my lines out when a bull terrior decided to climb on top of my kite putting a rip in on one of the outer panels ( I only just got this kite soyeah, I was pretty pissed off). I approached the bloke who proceeded to threaten to "punch my teeth out" and "pummel me". He suggested that I move down the beach towards the surf club away from the dog beach in a bit of an impolite manner. Ive been following this thread so I told him that we werent allowed down at the surfclub. Apart from being an absolute ****wit, he did raise a point during the confrontation. Theres just as many people on the dog beach as there are at the surf club...even more...especially during a hot day like today. So wouldnt it be more sensible to rid the notion of a restricted area and just go where its least crowded?

Hey Dan I agree it seems totally insane. It would be great if we could have the 500m or so deserted strip between Port and Leighton. Take a close look at the signs and you will find that at a point about 300m before the footbridge and the dog beach is where "surf craft" are allowed. This seems to be a reasonable enough buffer between us and the doggies...

We sailed at Leighton on Sunday. What a great day. Set up about 250m south of the foot bridge. Plenty of beach and no dogs looking for a kite to piss on.

Was suprised to see all the kites sailing off the Surf Club also.
