Hi Girl/Guys,

I looked at my harness yesterday for its third season
and
I was wondering about its anticipated life espectancy.

And then I thought that a response to the above question would be incomplete without further information. So I spent my sunday morning elaborating the following code to make everyone's life easier:

Could you please share your experience and let us know:

1 - how many seasons have you been kiding for:
2 - how meany failures:
3 - failure type:
4- harness type:
a- waist
b- genitals crusher
c- jacket
5 - your weight (kg):
a- <50,
b- 50-75
c- 75-100
d- >100
6 - your riding style:
a- "scenic drive",
b- "rally car"
c- "radical stunt"
7- your frequency on the water:
a- days/week:
or
b- days/month:

Thank you for your cooperation.

Fred

4- harness type:
a- waist Y

5 - your weight (kg):

c- 75-100

6 - your riding style:

b- "rally car"

7- your frequency on the water:

Thanks for the replies.

Jan/VB, are you changing for upgrading your gear or is the concern of failure the reason?

Thanks.

Pretty simple to check for failure likelyhood before each use.

Just look for frayed webbing at the attachment points. This is really the only place you are likely to experience a failure.

75-80kg, using a seat harness (can't remember the brand) since I started kiting in 2002 - and quite obsessively. But I'm pretty gentle on my gear.

Anyway, the main straps attaching to the spreader bar have frayed on each side last year. Taking it in to a sailmaker cost $30 bucks to replace them. Much cheaper than a new harness.

It is looking a bit worse for wear, but I'll keep goign a bit longer yet

lol - finally a well thought out enquiry in this forum - please make sure you dont do that again!

basically fitzy is right - check the webbing at the front and you should be right - that's the main place they wear out.

1 - how many seasons have you been kiding for:

too many to care to remember

2 - how meany failures:
3 - failure type:

A few meany failures - like gooseonthebay... not sure what his major malfuntion is...

Seriously I have never had a hassle, but I have know a couple of others who others have things break (1km out!) and or undo (in offshore winds!)

consult my mate my murphy (or is that silviu?!?!) on when things are likely to go wrong.

4- harness type:

a- waist

but I have a backup b- genitals crusher which i use from time to time. if you get the right one there should be no crushage at all, and it saves the ocassional unintended salt water enema

also c- jacket is not such a bad idea, especially if you have to wear a PFD when kitining where you are.

5 - your weight (kg):

c- 75-100 (maybe!)

6 - your riding style:

somwhere between a- "scenic drive" and b- "rally car"

7- your frequency on the water:

whenever the wind blows baby!

I had Naish harness for 4.5 years!
No failures, although, 1.5 years ago I changed the webbing as the spreader bar "digged" hard in it.

1 - how many seasons have you been kiting for: this year will be the 6 th season
2 - how many failures: none from the harness.
3 - failure type: N/A
4- harness type:

b. seat harness (I take care to have a good fit)

5 - your weight (kg):
c- 75-100

6 - your riding style:
a- "scenic drive",

7- your frequency on the water:
a- 4 -5 days/week:

And an answer to Galah: mate the harness will fail at the moment you expect the least to happen, and it will happen in such a way, that will produce the biggest damage, with the longest possible swim back to the shore, in the most shark infested waters, and just before the dusk, when the Coast Guard helicopter is scheduled for upgrade and the Life Saving Club people have gone interstate for a competition
Good swim

Thank you to everyone for the input.

It sounds like, in summary, it's a not too bad an idea to regularly check the webbing!!!

Has anyone ever broken the hook on a harness? In which conditions?

Thanks!

the "standard" hooks tend not to break, but I have seen a stack of fancy smancy all in one spinny ones break.

Sort of both. I'm more worried about failure, I've had harnesses go and it is pretty sucky. Incidently that was from metal fatigue not webbing fraying.

After close to a season my harness will be mashed up enough to warrant a nice new one rather than trying to wring a couple extra months outta it.

I've had my one North styler for three seasons.
Looked after it and its still immaculate
Kite whenever i can. In summer thats 3-5 times a week.
Harness is as good today as it was the day i took it off the shelf.

But as fathers day is coming i will get another one then and keep the one i have now as a spare.

Dont mess about, if you think your harness is wearing, change it. You dont want that baby breaking on you. Its seems, that like car tyres, people are prepared to scrimp on harnesses when it is probably the single bigest factor for safety and comfort.

That being said, my Dakine Tabu is 2 years old (2 uk years, so not used every other day) and still going strong. I like the rally car description for my riding style, but dodgem may be more appropiate - move, smash, get up and go again

Thanks for the reply Oakie,

My harness is a 3 year old Flying Object waist harness. It does not show any sign of ageing other than a greater flexibility than when it was new.

I believe that checking the gear, including harness, is part of the pre-flight safety check up. I guess that an even closer check up is recommended prior to the first sessions of the year.

This is during this close check up, and seeing no apparent distress of the harness, that I wondered about its life expectancy the other day.

Enjoy and kite safe,

Fred

All I do is keep looking at my harness, and then thinking about the next one I'm going to get. Mine is 1 year old only, and disintigrating before my very eyes.

yes, what we need is a good solid leather harness!

now there's a good use for feral horses on moreton island.

I can see shooting the horses, but a leather harness seems like it would really get disgusting.
