Hi Guys,
I am new to this sport, and just at the point of getting up and away on the board. Today I had a little disaster. I managed to get on the board and started heading down wind, not thinking about where I was in respect to beach/Land at Pelican. And to my amassment I was well beyond the land. So in desperate hope I ditched the kite in the water took the chick loop out and tried to swim back for "20 mins" with no success. At which time the stitch set in. So I decided I better ditch the hit and swim back to land with the board. And to my total delight I made it, without the kite. I have informed the coast guard about the matter, and may I add they where very happy that I reported it, as this could have been a man-missing incident.
So if anyone hear anything about a kite being found can you call me on + 4055 11242

Thanks,

Scott

welcome to kiteboarding, it can be unforgiving of errors

I now write my name and number on all my equipment, and it paid off when my lost, brand new twin tip came back to me via a nice boatie who spotted its bright yellow deck bobbing around in the bay later that night.

I hope you get your kite back -and maybe you should do a quick review of self rescue technique and site selection

Yeh Bondo,
I here you, I will watch what I do as far as having land between me an the water infuture, but as far as rescue I am not really sure what else I could have done with out a leg leash, if you cannot go up wind. I had to lose something. And with the kite I am not sure I could have managed to swim back to the beach. So that is where the kite won, atleast I could float on that when I was really tired."Which may I add I was at a few occassions.
I hope also I get the kite back, dont really think I will though
Regards,
Scott

were you kiting without a safety release?

If not you could have just pulled the safety, kite depowered wound in the lines grabbed the board and tootled off back in kite intact.

Can i suggest that if you get the kite back, or get a new one, get a safety release its 100% necessary.
Mike

Hey Scotty

Bummer about your kite.
But did you have any lessons? You should have been taught self rescue... in the flat water at Pelican you could have kept both kite and board... seems to me a cheap price to pay compared to the cost of a new kite?

Hope you get your kite back...

aint peli fun?

its easy to guess in hindsight :)

it sounds like you could do with some practice on self rescue techniques and putting a bit of thought into how to get out of a crappy situation.

some sort of leash that you can attach to your board can be useful... dont use it all the time, just attach it when you decide to swim in so that you don't have to deal with the board, it leaves you free to manouvre or get to the kite

once you dont have to worry about the board... SECURE THE KITE :)

release to safety, swim to the kite and if you can roll up your lines do so... theres a few ways to do this search the forums and you'll find a couple

you should then be able to roll up your kite (just make it more manageable somehow)... let some air out of hte main bladder, roll the tips around the struts... just get some control of things

then see if you can use the kite to drag you landward.

remember at peli your in an enclosed space... your going to reach land eventually just stay calm and don't wear yourself out. its fairly important that when you do come close to obstacles, boats, beaches, wherever you end up that you have control of your kit and it isn't trailing lines all over the place etc and that you havent worn yourself out swimming into the wind ;)

whilst im not encouraging it, a few ppl have self rescued around the yacht club, theres a big open fairly shallow bay that you will end up in as long as you keep dragging to the west as best you can

"dont go somewhere you haven't already been in your mind 5 minutes ago" (or something like that pinched from youngie :)

I think Scotty was saying he f'd up by going past and downwind of the spit.

He then tried to swim the kite and gear upwind to get back to land.

Even well-trained in self-rescue I think this is a bit of an impossibility. (Although I did help someone swim his foil in who was in the same position - he'd been trying for about 20 mins and was f'd by the time I got there).

The only real option would be to go downwind to the Brewery and do the marathon walk of shame around Crawley Bay.

My 2c anyway.

JJD,
You got that right, I was just trying to explain exactly what happened. I was thinking about heading all the way down to the brewery, but the doubt was going through my mind, as I had never been down there before. So I had no idea what I was going to face.
At least I am here to tell the story, will have to try find some pennies and get a new kite today. And this time I will makesure I have land on one side off me.

Scott,

try the local police (probably Claremont) and if picked up by a boat, the Water Police - may even be worthwhile trying local yacht clubs.

If a boat picked it up,

Id recommend that you spend 30 minutes of your life ringing all the yacht clubs on the river and asking them to post a sign on the notice boards.

All boating have good ethics when it comes to helping out on the water etc etc so theyd want to get the kite to its rightful owner im sure

they may even ring the kite shops and tell them, so that may be worth a shot too

good luck with the hunt -

not trying to take the piss :)

theres a sea wall running along most of mounts bay road, no idea how deep, would be a pain in the ass

its fairly shallow if you can stay west enough and a fairly open beachy area but mind the yachts and moorings

theres also some sorta seascout hall or something tucked right at the end next to the yacht club, ive seen them canoe out and pick up boards plenty of times

hope u find ur kite :(

Thanks everyone for the input.
I think I will try close this issue and take it as a costly experience which hopefully wont happen again. Hope every one has a happy and safe New Year on the kiting front.

Hey Scottyboy

Sorry to harp on about this but if you don't know how to self rescue now is the time to learn...a loose kite getting on Mts Bay Rd or the freeway could be a disaster and cost you a lot more than the cost of your kite.

Chk out http://kitesurfingschool.org/safety.htm#Rescue%20Techniques... this is a little dated in terms of the equipment but explains the general idea behind the technique...no need to hassle with deflating struts or anything if in an onshore wind or you have a lee shore to go to (downwind). Also you can sail in to almost any shore with control. And most times keep your board with you too.
A good idea is to practise the technique on the beach 1st (leighton is suitable) then try it in the water once or twice.

There was a guy that came to Pelican point at about 6.30pm on Wednesday with a 12.5 metre kite that he found at the brewery while he was crabbing. He said he was going to leave it at the Pelican Point kite shop on Stirling Hwy. He was a nice bloke so I'd say he did it.

Happy to help
