i have had Simon rescue my kit gladly got him a carton coronas, well worth the few grand to replace the gear that was heading off to the wild blue yonda, found a bar and lines on the beach , the young lady arrived with a six pack didn't have to ask, depends on the person nature I guess

I think that as long as the gear rescuer doesn't have to go out of their way to get the gear back to the owner then a heartfelt thanks would be more than enough for me.

What's with the feeling of entitlement that some people have... "Oh I did someone a big favour by not leaving their **** on the beach when I left"... or "I rescued their board and it took me all of 120 seconds to get it back to the beach... well f*ck I really deserve something for not being a ** human being"...

I say... be nice and give them their gear back... it'll come back around again.

I'm thinking more along the lines of SS Link. Must be the biggest duds of all kites. I'm ashamed to admit I bought one early on. But didn't know any better.
Sorry if I offend the Dr cos they are his favourite kite.

Not necessarily a kite.... that'd be a little hard to leave behind but I've left my bar behind before...

I just think it's a bit extreme to expect a minimum payment for gear recovery unless you've really gone above and beyond to rescue and return the gear.

Now there's a business idea for busy spots with lots of beginners :)

You should offer a reward. The finder should refuse. It's what decent people do.

The easiest thing is to go with a six pack or a bottle of wine and just give it to them. The risk is you could be forcing beer or wine on a person who doesn't want either. In the past I have rewarded people for help with slabs and bottles of wine and it has felt kind of awkward.

Unless you're homeless it's unlikely any of you need money or free booze.

BTW. I lost a wallet in the jungle in New Guinea. A local found it, tracked me down and returned it with all the cash in it. The guy refused any reward even though the contents of the wallet would have been several weeks pay for him. I have frequently experienced similar generosity of spirit in India where people do things for you and are insulted if you offer any kind of cash reward.

Agree with gorgo. Once upon a time it was considered normal to return something lost to its owner without expecting a reward. Some people would be insulted if they were offered a reward, but now people want to be rewarded for just doing the right thing. You have returned something that does not belong to you to its rightfull owner. its the sort of thing that a lot of normal decent people do evey day. You havent saved the world or jumped in front of a bus to save a child. You have returned something & the person getting their stuff back appreciate it & appreciate people like you very much.
