Hey guys,

I'm heading up to Mission Beach in the near future - does anyone have any local info?

I've been checking out Google Earth and the beaches look really thin.... any good spots for launching/landing etc..

Any power lines to watch out for?

Are kiters welcomed by the locals or hunted down with pitch forks and flaming torches??

Cheers in advance for any info..

Have had a couple of the mission lads on Surfari with us recently. Not too much first hand info but from what they say you would be right about the beaches being fairly cramped. I'll see if I can dig up some details on the contacts down that way and pass them on. Would definately help to have some local knowledge. And if your heading any further North be sure to look us up.

Mission can be a bit of a failure sometimes especially in a South Easterly as Dunk Island can serve as a wind break. You may be better served to jump in the car and head a bit further north to Curramine Beach think its about 20 minutes drive from Mission.

I've had a couple of great sessions at Mission, loads of room to launch and land. It's a wide beach (wide enough to be used as a drop zone by the local jumpers). I kited directly in front of the beach front camp ground. No problems.

I live in Innisfail which is about 1/2 hour drive north of Mission Beach. Have kited Mission a couple of times but it can be hit and miss with the wind. Dunk island is only 3-4 Km of the coast and it can make the wind a bit patchy. Beaches are great but tend to be a bit thin on the high tide the further south you go. We currently have 3 kiters living in the Innisfail area and for this reason love to have vistitors come and kite around the area. We mainly head to Kurrimine beach as it has the best aspect for the South east winds and the best variety. King reef is only a couple of 100m off the beach and you can kite out over the reef and spot the turtles, manta rays and reef sharks. On the low tide the reef shelters the waters and provides flat smooth conditions. At the southern end of the beach their is a break in the reef that allows the swell to roll in and we get a small surf breaking. No fear of crowds here and as I said we love to have vistors come and ride with us. If you have any more questions let me Know.

Hull Heads looks interesting on Google Earth.... so does Kurramine Beach!

It seems like with both locations there's no direct roads access - you have to go back out to the highway to get around the rivers!!?

Bringing up the boat might be the best idea....
