Im staying in the Brisbane (Scarborough) area for a month and all i've heard from locals, fishermen, yachties, taxi drivers etc is ---- DONT GO KITESURFING IN MORETON BAY ---- THERES TOOOOOO MANY BULL SHARKS!!!!!!!!! YOU'LL GET EATEN FOR SURE!!
I even rang a local kiteshop for info and was told that i'd be nuts if i went kitesurfing on the eastern side of Moreton island as there are more SHARKS there than on Fraser island?
Theres a southeasterly forecast tomorrow and i'd like to sail over to Moreton Island or North Stradbroke to get a chance to kite in the surf but all i hear is SHARKS SHARKS SHARKS!?
Anyone know the truth? - wives tales or true stories?, is there the same amount of SHARKS here as there is everywhere else???

Dont flame me,
Serious replies are welcome,

Waz.

I have boating on morten bay for 18 years any only have ever seen sharks twice. once at tangalooma ship wrecks on the ocean floor and once a heap of fisherman catching sharks (biggest 5ft) at the jumpin pin in between NRTH and STH staddie. You have nothing to worry about people just love to hype stuff up. Mate I reckon jellyfish are way more of a threat than sharks those little fxxxers sting like hell, where at least if a shark gets ya it'll be quick....

Hangtime, I headed out from Victoria Pt today, unusually clear water and I saw nothing. Had myself a blast. I have only ever seen dolphins, dugongs and turtles in my time out kiting Moreton Bay over a couple of years. Sure there are sharks there but never had a run in with them myself.
Long way to travel for some surf. Is the Goldie or Sunshine Coast easier to get to? Good luck either way. Warren

Spoke with a Marine Biologist from UQ a week ago, he reckons theres lots of 'big sharks' around Peel Is (on the way to Straddie), but the bigger danger is Stone Fish at Wello. Fishermen friends think we're mad for hanging around murky water river mouth areas (Brighton) due to Bull Sharks. Personally I'm **** scared of standing on a Stingray.

But ..... whatever.

Sharks at Moreton???

Kited there and seen heaps and still kited...

Have a look at these pics? would you reconsider? These pics were taken on the East coast of Morton not far from Tangalooma and not far offshore.

I have windsurfed from wello to strattie and moreton a number of times and touchwood never encountered any big fish with pointed fins other than dophins, turtles, dugongs, huge rays (I mean wider than when you open your arms up!)... but nothing threatening. Mind you, the first time a dophin popped up next to me it scared the hell out of me lol. I am sure there are sharks are around but I believe (and would want to believe) that most sharks stay away from human noise (sound of board, motor....) and they go away before you get there, just like stingrays... That's what I choose to believe anyway. Also I do not eat fish so at least I may not smell like their food lol.

Some parts of the bay is pretty shallow we were standing like half way between Brissy and Moreton right in the middle of the bay! Water is often crystal clear once you go out like a k or 2.

Scarby is ok for kiting in the beach area before the rock wall, that's where we often go on a westerly. Just stay away from the canal openings.

Last summer there were numerous kitings of similar description from different people around Queens Beach (not North Queens Beach) next to the reef and off Scarborough Beach in front of the Scarborough hotel. I have seen a very small shark probably a little bullshark making passes at me in front of the Scarborough hotel doing a upwind downwind trip from Scarboroughs west coast right through to Queens Beach. I didn't try doing the same downwind trip again...the lagoon at Scarborough is full of 'wildlife' I guess that's why it's the most popular fishing spot for the boaties which are there ALL the time. Another kitesurfer was stalked by a by a big MOFO shark again in front of the Scarborough Hotel area. Dead turtles have washed up on this beach.

On Sunset/Dusk last year around January beachgoers watched baitfish jumping in less then a metre of water at Scarborough's westcoast beach near the Caravan park with a small fin tracing through the water. It was probably a bronze whaler or bull shark but that's something common at that time of the year and we still kited. Probably not best kiting on sunset, in murky water, incoming tide in January.

There has been numerous sightings of a rather large shark on Queens Beach just south of Osbourne reef. This has been seen by local kayakers, apartment owners, and Kiters.

I dont think it's anything to be concerned about but I would keep out of the Scarborough reef area. We're in their territory there are a number of precautions you can take. How often have we heard the cliche scenario of when people have been attacked? swimming at night, sunset in murky water or near seal colonies or diving for abolone etc.
