Hey everybody,

Well I would like some advice on Cairns, looks like I might be moving to Cairns from Perth near the end of the year and I would like a heads up on what to expect wind wise for Kiting? What sort of weather to expect? What the wet season is like? etc. Any info on Cairns would be appreciated.

Cheers, Octane

Cairns can be a great place to kite with usually reliable winds (albeit this year) from usually April through to Sept/Oct. The summer generally has no or little wind and with the ole jellies it's best not to kite at all, the local cable park will be copping a hiding from the local kiters to get some board time during summer. Winds can vary from 15 to 30 with the SE trades. The earlier months often have rain/showers but generally as the seaon progresses the conditions improve (you listening huey???- they are meant to be improving!!!! - sorry just venting for such a lousy year.) You can often experience 4 to 5 days a week of good kiting conditions. Most locals ride kites between 10 and 14m.

The sand bars at the river mouth can provide some great flat water conditions but they change each wet season with the flooding of the rivers so they differ a great deal season to season. Last year was classic, this year they are fairly ordinary.

The reef can be classic to kite and there are numerous beaches to kite although almost everyone in Cairns kites at Yorkey's Knob or up at Port Douglas. Locals are a good mob, keep an eye out for one another and are generally a friendly crew.

It's Extreme, local kite shop, can cater for all kiting needs and a run by a couple of local kiters.

Cheers

Capt.

Thanks ate your post was helpful to my question, however I am now extremely disappointed that after waiting all winter ere in Perth for the Kite season to start, I am now going to have to wait another season equilivant in Cairns before I can Kite again. Major suck. So does pretty much no kiting occur in Summer, ie, Nov - Mar?

What about the town of Cairns, doe anyone have any feed back as to what its like?

Thanks again, Octane.

Most people do not kite during summer as it is a real risk. One sting from a large Box Jelly will kill or make you very ill. Irakanji jelly can kill but more than likely will make you very ill. During summer our winds are typically 10 to 15 knots from the NE and these conditions favour the jellies and can be around in large numbers. You can kite but you need to be wearing a full body lycra suit, booties for the feet and gloves on the hands. The head is exposed and I really wouldn't want to be stung there as it would be curtains for sure. Plus boardies over the top to conceal the old lollybag look, all in 35c heat with extremely high humidity making it very uncomfortable for a lousy 10 knots. Almost no one kites in summer.

However, we do get the odd SE come through which apparently forces the jellies back up the creeks and are not prevalent on the beaches. The risk is still there but most locals will go out. We have a new cable park which most kiters will be frequenting to get some sort of fix.

As for Cairns itself I think the place is great, obviously everything is catered towards the tourism industry. What exactly did you want to know??? I will do my best to let you know. This may help:

I got a fair few fun sessions over last summer, but that was a lot of light wind kiting with a skimboard. I remember some excellent sessions in Feb with plenty of wind, and there was a kitable day at least once or twice a week in the "off" season.

The cable park at least offsets total no wind days.

While donning a stinger suit does make you look a little gimp-like, it's much better than not kiting at all, (and avoiding excruciating death inducing neurotoxin fuelled paroxisms from the jellyfish). However nothing is 100% certain to keep you safe, and Box Jellyfish are deadly, so there's certainly an element of risk.

The crocs in the river mouths are excellent motivation to stick your landings, so you'll progress quite quickly. There was 1 spotted at the Thomatis River Mouth (southern end of Yorkeys) last year - but there are many more recreational fisherman, dog walkers, peverts etc on the beach at more risk of being taken than kiters so we still enjoy a 100% safety record and at last check it's still Crocs nil - kiters nil.

While there are plenty of kiteable beaches, it always seems that Yorkeys has a few extra knots, and all the kiters tend to be there. Bees around a honeypot, or tossers in a jerkle, I still haven't worked it out; But, a better crew would be hard to find. Maybe it's because we are a tourist and hospitality town that we welcome other kiters. We're always keen to assist with a launch or a landing because we get to rifle through the stuff in visitor's motor homes while they are out on the water.

There's even a North Qld Kitesurfing social club here http://haffner.pdcwa.com.au

Other pictures, video and assorted kiting related stuff in Cairns can be found here homepage.mac.com/boxburg/kitesurfing/Menu71.html

Rob Smallwood's gallery of photographs from Cairns Kiteweek is a cracker, and the video of the guys kiting on the reef is spectacular www.kitesurfing.com.au/Kiteweek_2005/KITEWEEK_ENTRY_PAGE.htm

Check out the DVD that comes with the subscriber's copy of KBM for more Cairns action.

Cairns in general is a great place to live. Houses are still relatively affordable, cost of living is quite low, but so are wages in general. Lifestyle is a big selling point of the region, and you'll save a fortune on winter clothes. We can generally get by in the coldest months with not much more than sheepskin lined speedos.

In terms of nightlife, restaurants, clubs etc, you will be spoiled for choice, and if you're single, there's a constant stream of Euro, English, Canadian and American travellers just wishing to meet their own personal Steve Irwin. Most of the locals can't match Steve's articulate and inteligent style, so pick up lines are limited to 3 tones of grunt. If you can drink your bodyweight and drink it again just in case, you'll fit right in.

Another great thing about Cairns is that kiting and diving are best in opposite conditions. I.E, today, when there's no wind it's a cracker out there on the reef. And vise versa. If you like anything outdoors, there's something to do all the time, no matter the weather.

Like today for example. It's glassy smooth. Not a breath of air. Kind of explains this long and information poor post really...

I am originally from Brissy (Scarborough) but have spent a fair bit of time living out of Cairns. I was based there for awhile but after 6 months just got sick of it and spent another 6 months commuting from Cairns back down to Brisbane.

Cairns can be a pretty big party town but that's only for half the year. For 6 months a year the town is buzzing with tourists. Nightclubs are packed every night and tourists are swamping the place (checkout the lagoon on the esplanade!) However for the other half of the year it becomes almost a Ghost town and you really start to wonder what all the hype is about. The beaches just outside of Cairns are pretty feral and you wont see any nice beaches of clear water until you head right out.

The busy season starts about June but dies down after December. It's a bit too hot for most of the Europeans etc. Furthermore The wet season kicks in that time. It rains heavy everyday and the wind is crap. The humidity might start to really get to you. I suggest use of the cable ski park!

There are alot of things to do in and around Cairns for tourists. It gives them a bit of an adventure base. Within close vicinity to Cairns tourists can enjoy white water rafting in Tully, wonder Port Douglas, get attacked my midgies in Daintree, see whales and dive the reefs, hop islands and go out to the tablelands. For clubbing there's Gilhooleys where you can see some pics from the last Australian Kiteboarder mag. Cairns has probably got it all for tourists.

As far as kiting goes Yorkeys Knob is probably best for Kiting but there seems to be a bit of action at Port Douglas now. Yorkeys Knob is alot closer to Cairns Central so its convenience is probably why its most popular.

Keep in mind that there are the stingers, freaky jellies, crocs and other nasty natives that MAY be a bit of a nuisance. If you just pay a bit of attention to these things shouldn't be a problem. Ask the locals they'll let you know if you are ever in doubt.

Cairns isn't the cheapest place to live in. Alot of places are a bit run down and are in need or in the process of getting updated. However there is some gold mine properties around. I used to live in the Lakes Resort which is a common refuge for many of the Sydney/Melbournites but only lived there because it was close to the airport. Rent is not cheap in Cairns central or some beaches but I think you could get a pretty great spot right in Yorkey's knob within walking distance from the kiting beach!

Anyway enjoy Cairns!
