Ok, so heres the latest. The Noosa Council have decided that in exchange for being allowed to kite in the passage we will be banned from the frying pan(area inside the mouth), due to the disturbance of the birds. Now for those of you who dont know, that is the perfect flat water, clean wind, shallow, boat free, perfect for learning and absolutly safest spot to kite. I have been teaching their during the short season of ne and not once saw the birds which were generally hanging out several 100 m away on an exposed bit of sand take flight due to kiters in the area, the kids chasing them and what I presume to be feral cats, dogs or other natural predators that i could not see caused them to lift off every now and then, sometimes, rarely, you get my point.

I grew up in Noosa and in the Council's defence they have been (in the past) pretty responsive to petitions and other methods of opposition to certain things. I agree with Mike that everyone should write a letter expressing their opposition to this (even if you are in other parts of the Sunshine Coast) as it is looking like the Noosa Mayor is going to be the head of the whole coast. But he is generally a good guy.

Hopefully the Council will listen to us.

I will raise this matter at the SEQKA AGM which is this Thurs night (24th) We will then be in a position to forward a letter to the council on behalf of the association.

I hope that some of the Sunny Coast members can attend the AGM or at least provide items for discussion and nominations for committee memberships.

Cheers - Fitzy SEQKA Treasurer

i got sent the hard copy in the mail last time they where at it because i criticized them for making reference to a report that wasn't publicly available.
i threw it out i think so you should ask direct for it.
the short of it was that kites caused like 10% of a disturbance where they where in contact.

I will provide further details and info in a few days after we have collected some facts.

Noosa Kiteboarding

What kind of birds are we talking about here ?
Pelicans ?
You see, there is even discrimination with native wildlife.
Pelicans are loved.....
but pigeons, crows and vultures aren't.
Koalas are cute....
but crocs and sharks aren't.

Apparently it is a species of bird which nests here before migrating to siberia during the winter, when disturbed they lift off, fly in a circle then chill out again. This lifting off ALLEGEDLY uses up stored energy needed for the flight to siberia.

If they're holidaying from Siberia, they will be arctic terns or godwits. Godwits are quite rare. They will only be there in summer, so logically a ban would be have to be seasonal. 4WDs and boats are much more disruptive so therefore they should be banned as well.

My general observation from kiting isolated sand-spits is that marine birds adapt to kites quite quickly. Once they realise a flying kite is not a threat, they just tend to ignore them. I suspect there is not a lot of science behind the proposed ban.

Sounds like you need a environmental scientist and a lawyer on your side. Surely there must be some in the kiting fraternity?

Alright, after several hours of meetings with the other school and our reps at council and several of the councillers, the facts stand that the council do not have the power to ban kiting at all in that area as it is controlled by MSQ who arent interested. The councillers (dont confuse them with the council)also conceded that there was insufficient evidence of kites disrupting the birds. The code of conduct is totally voluntary and without the full support of the kite community will be useless, everyone hold on to your hats as the code of conduct will be submitted in the next few days which specifically states that we will not be supporting a ban on the pan.
Seems that the council were trying to bluff us last week with empty threats, but who knows what to beleive.
happy kiting

Hopefully some good news will come out of this!!!

I would be keen if you could send me a copy of the 'Code of Conduct' you propose.

I spoke to Matt C before Christmas and he was going to send me some paperwork. This may be what he was refering to?

Bloody hell, does anyone else see this crap as just a bunch of old grinches and surly ex-policemen trying to find something to gripe about, and impose stupid rules upon the public so that they feel their job isn't entirely useless and their government funded salaries continue to increase?

Sounds like a heap of godwit sh1t to me. If the little suckers can fly all the way to siberia how much energy drain would there be in a couple of fly pasts over the nest.
You'd need more than a few kms' of excess fuel on board if you were going that far.

Maybe you should get the tourism & immigration dudes to issue the whole flock with permanent resident visa's. Why the fkuk would you fly all the way to a place like Siberia if you were allowed to shack up on the warm & sunny Sunshine Coast. Plenty to do and see around there and no issues over energy reserves then.

I've never kited in that area, but hope to one day soon.

Hate to butt in,but if you are having problems, calling the Councilors names like "Sphincters" and"Old grinches "etc. isn't very smart. It could get back !

Be diplomatic, find exactly what their concerns are, then gather the information needed to convince them kites are no threat.

Don't underestimate the protection of wildlife habitats !

Good call user... hey when ur over this way give us a buzz and I will introduce ya to the sunny coast crew and we can have a beer.

Man... I cant believe they are using this stupid bird excuse again. The funny thing is they are going on about the environmental inpact and in one bitter sweep nature totally whipped out the area after several hundred mm of rain fell. But what really gets up my nose is they are pedantic about an environmentally friendly sport yet the 4wds drives charge through there.

Arghhh... wonder if we will go through it all for a 3rd time when the councils amalgamate?

Definitely would like to write to the council again but would like to know what the scientific position is
