Hey I'm moving from Sydney's eastern suburbs upto Wahroonga and was wondering if anyone knows of good learner spots so that I don't have to make an hours drive to Botany/Kurnell each time!

Thanks and Have a great New Year!!

Sorry Caela but you still have to go to toxic old Botany Bay the glowing origin of European domination is still your "local"

Well, now that you're halfway to the Central Coast, you've got Lake Macquarie, Lake Munmorah, Tuggerah Lakes, and even a few others that will be a shorter drive than to Botany Bay. But hey mate! Forget the flat water stuff and just learn to kite in the surf -- HEAPS more fun! You haven't fully lived till you've launched off a head high ramp at full speed in 20 knots. The ocean is what kiteboarding is all about! Cheers, Robbo

I went into the surf for the first time on boxing day.

Bloody hell! It's like being a beginner all over again .

Good fun when you're not getting pounded by big waves though.

I guess the question is r u a kitesurfer or a kiteboarder?

I'm on the north shore and the break can be a pain to get pasted for a learner (like me yesterday).

What works for me is dragging to deeper water then getting on the board.

Try Collaroy in a northerly, Longy in a southerly.
Dolls point sucks.
Northern beaches the wind is more constant. But I did get stung 2 times last Sunday... damn blue bottles.

Victor: Sunday (boxing day) the waves were small with perfect wind.

Happy new year and good winds.

Hey Flysurfer,

Waves seemed pretty big to me where I was down in Wollongong.

This is true. I've always called myself a kiteboarder. I'm not going to say I can kitesurf until I can kite surf. And to me this means actually surfing the wave and using the kite, probably not what most people do with which is kiteboard in the surf. Know what I mean? There needs to be riding the wave and true surfing whilst utilising the kite to assist you.

check out space monkeys 2. The wave riding is absolutely brilliant. They are actually getting into the barrel and using the wave's energy to go foward as opposed to using the kite to do some turns on the wave.

That's exactly what I mean, kitesurfing!

Caelah, sorry we've highjacked your post .

C'mon Fellas, Caelah is trying to learn. Learning in the surf is just plain harder than flat water, not to mention more expensive when you trash the kite in the shore break.

There are some good spots on the Central Coast - check the archives.

Thanks for the advise! As for kiting in the surf...for sure I'd love to do it but like any sport you can't run before you can walk so I'll not venture there just yet.

Hi Caelah,

I think flat water in Sydney is really only Botany and Dolls (maybe boat harbour). Otherwise as was said, Central Coast.

Hey Flysurfer & Victor,
Only someone who kites would know whether they are a 'kitesurfer' or 'kiteboarder' - to the public its just the same thing, but they certainly don't care about the technical side of it.

Is a 'kitesurfer' better than a 'kiteboarder' in your opinion?
Are you wanting to separate the two from eachother? Just because of how you use a wave?

A true 'kitesurfer' should be someone riding a proper surfboard on a wave with a kite. But that just puts a limit on it anyway.

In reality everyones just riding different boards in different locations with a kite. Which equals 'kiteboarding'

Kiteboarding sounds a lot less limited if you ask me....
I'm a kiteboarder because i don't limit myself to doing one thing, especially by how i ride a wave. If i wanted to just let the wave push me all the time i may as well paddle onto it & not be holding the kite.

It just seems silly to get that technical and to call the sport something different because for a few seconds you where being pushed by water and not by the wind.

I've spent a little bit of time aound newcastle, and the waves were big, but when I was learning I went out in the sea at birubi (which is further north again - about 35mins I think) and although the waves were huge out the back, there was a lot of room in front with reasonably shallow water and little waves. I've found lots of places like this - Tallows at Byron, Palm Beach (the Kirra one) Lennox head/flat rock, and there were heaps more that I can't remember now.

I know these are all out of the range of someone in sydney, but there seems to be lots of places where you can apply yourself to the ocean without it costing your kites/board/skin. It's a fun too - good way to learn, boosting off little waves...

I with emu this sport is pretty wild. I have some terrible bashings just in the in the flat water. I reakion stay out of the surf until you can turn hard and make it every time.
