NSW South Coast & Canberra Kiters Season Opener BBQ

To kick off the South Coast and Canberra chapter of the NSWKBA, we're putting on a BBQ on Saturday the 29th of September, the October long weekend, from 12 noon.
At North Broulee Beach, but if the wind is Southerly an alternative venue will be arranged.
Everybody is welcome, you'll be able to sign up for membership of AKSA for the 2007/2008 season.
I realise the South Coast covers a huge distance of coastline, basically from Nowra to the border at Eden, we'd love to meet some kiters from other parts of the coast down here.
Laurie, if you could arrange a nice 15-20 knot NE'rly that'd be much appreciated.

It'd be great to get an idea of how many to expect, so I know how many sausages to buy, RSVP here or by PM.

Hey mate, I'm moving to Canberra in mid-November and am keen to get some kiting in at the Sth Coast over summer.
Missing Perth's summer will be a bit of a bummer but the Sth Coast is much less crowded. I used to live in Canberra almost 10 years ago and visited the beaches around Broulee almost every weekend there was decent weather (not for kiting back in those days).

I'm keen to meet up with some Sth Coast kiters and get as much water-time as possible over the summer.

Sk

(PS: Be warned, I am a wind jinx)

Sink Cut, once a south coast kiter, always....be good to catch up!

Skinner, even if you're gonna miss out on the BBQ, you can join AKSA and be part of the South Coast and Canberra kiters (SCCK) to hook up with locals and get some inside info on where to kite etc. That's half the point of having a local division of NSWKBA, and to try to ensure we kite safely and keep access to the beaches.

Disclaimer - there are no nice beaches down here, or wind, but lots of sharks and antarctic water temps.

Good point.Oops

I've got the date wrong, the BBQ will be on the Saturday of the October long weekend, 29th September.
Is that when you're coming down Dave?

Thanks for pointing that out!

Would love to come for the BBQ but unfortunately will still be 3000km away.

A little off topic, but I have a question re South Coast wind.

I notice that the Moruya Airport graph is always very low when compared with the forecast, and the other sites in the vicinity (Montague and Merimbula).
What sort of winds do you guys typically get down there in Summer?
I'd like to think that the Moruya Airport site is just badly placed, and that I won't always have to have 16m+ of kite up...

Sk

(edit: the graphs at www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=6087 and
www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=6088
that I have uploaded look bleak. Note the Batemans site is a bit inland tho (at the RSL).)

nah - not down that weekend :(

Skinner, Last season the wind at broulee and maroya compared well with the areas around, I could only make weekends, holidays and the odd day off and I was on my 9 bow most of the time! (I am about 100kg)

c'mon dave - you've got to come down that weekend - it'll either be sick wind and you can watch Magoo whipping the boys into a kiteloop frenzy, or it'll be flat and i can teach you how to catch a decent drummer.

Awesome, sounds like we've got a party.
A small contingent from Sydney and NSWKBA will be coming down too.

I've thought of another use for unwanted old kites, picnic blankets.

Well the long range forecast has got green NE arrows, not that that means anything, but it's a good enough reason for a BUMP.

LAST MINUTE CHANGE OF LOCATION

The weather forecast doesn't look good for kiting, gently Westerlies, but the BBQ is still on, it will be at Shelley Beach, Moruya Heads, where there are Public BBQ's, Toilets etc.

You know me Lovey, the Bangers will be gourmet. Coopers Pale?

Pity about the wind, but it should be a nice day at the beach, and a chance to get more out of your AKSA membership than a tag to hang on your harness.

Hi toby,

Just joined the forum and noticed I've just missed the BBQ.

I'm a Canberra kiter...most kite on the lake but always keen for a coast trip. Would like to meet up for any get together being organised

Cheers

Matt

Yeah great, you didn't miss much kiting wise, but the BBQ was fun.

It's time to renew memberships with NSWKBA, when you sign up, you can choose to receive information about SCCK events. There will be another barbie, probably in December.

Kiting "on the lake", you mean Burley Griffin? Or land kiting on Lake George?

Thanks Gav.
The Australian Kite Surfing Association (AKSA) is split into state bodies, in our case NSWKBA.
from http://www.aksa.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=13&Itemid=29....
Membership gives you $10m in Third Party Public Liability Insurance 24 hours a day, every day of the year whilst kiting anywhere within Australia and overseas (excluding USA & Canada). Combines with the development of the Safe Kiting Guidelines and implemenation of the cards and tags, this gives the sport valuable recognition and safety assurance in the eyes of councils, government bodies and local authorities.

Looking at the pic of you goin large in the lake with Parliament House in the background and no doubt very gusty westerlies it's probably a good idea to get yourself some insurance!
Hope to see you down here sometime.
