My preference

1. Lancelin (closish, waves and flat water)
2. Perth (close, lots of spots to choose from, but probly no waves)
3. Geraldton (bit too far for a lot of people but sic spot)

I think if we get a week of no wind at that time of the year we would be damn unlucky.

Hi all

Now i know this may sound a little biased but considering the majority of cometitors will be coming from the east coast then the idea with minimal cost should be considered. If you move the comp all over the place it just makes things harder for everyone except the locals.

Granted you all had to come up with the dough for the last few nationals and that is a valid reason for saying stuff the eastern states but im sure that they would appreciate it and WA would be easily considered for future nationals quicker if the logistics arent a nightmare.

I recently made the long trip from Townsville to WA for two weeks and now i know exaclty how big a trip that is. Lancilin is a great choice but maybe a hire bus should be considered, maybe as part of the entry fee. Woodies is also a great spot but their are no ammenities so that may have to be considered. Also sponsors will want to get value for money so the public should also be considered for the selection of the venue.

Just my thoughts.

AS MUCH AS I DONT LIKE TO SAY IT AS I AM AN EX GERO BOY BUT GERO JUST DOESNT HAVE THE GOODS PERTH DOES.
PERTH HAS DECENT ACCOMODATION AND A VARIETY OF GOOD SPOTS ALL REASONABLY CLOSE.
I DONT THINK THERE IS ANY NEED TO HAV TO TRAVEL TO LANCELIN OR GERO.
AS FOR PEOPLE SAYING CHOOSE A BETTER PLACE RATHER THAN A PLACE GOOD FOR SPECTATORS AND COMPETITOPRS, WELL I DUNNO ABOUT OTHERS BUT JAN I KITED NEARLY EVERY DAY AROUND PERTH AND IT ROCKED....
I DONT SEE OTHERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE CONDITIONS IN FACT I SEE A LOT OF EUROS TRAVVELING HERE TO KITE....
PERTH IS W.A'S CAPITAL AND IT HAS CONSTANT WIND, GOOD VARIETY OF SPOTS, SOME NICE BEACHES (INCLUDING EYE CANDY) AND A LOT OF INTEREST IN THE SPORT BY NON PARTICIPANTS FROM THE LOCAL BIKE/WALK PATHS AROUND THE BEACHES AND RIVERS. HELL MAYBE WE CAN TALK SOME OF THOSE TOPLESS BETTIES DOWN AT BRIGHTON TO CATCH OUR KITES LIKE I HEAR THEY HAD AT THE NATIONALS OVER EAST...
OH AND ALSO THINK ABOUT THE YOUNG CREW THAT TRAVEL TO THESE COMPETITIONS, I THINK THEY WOULD MUCH RATHER NORTHBRIDGE OR SOME OF THE OTHER SPOTS TO PARTY AROUND PERTH RATHER THAN GERO'S 2 CLUBS AND A HAND FULL OF SEEDY BARS..
IF PEOPLE ARE THINKIN OF WAVES AT POINT MOORE, HELLO HELLS ADN KITTY'S IS LIKE 200+ METRES OFF THE BEACH. WHO IS GONNA BE ABLE TO SEE THAT? AND HOW DO THE JUDGES SEE?
AT PLACES LIKE SCABS, WOODIES AND SOMETIMES LEIGHTON, AND HELL MAYBE COTT THE BREAKS ARE NOT FAR FROM THE SHORE....
LOOKS LIKE A FAIR ARGUMENT FOR PERTH.....

Hey guys , it would be great if you all take the short drive down to Secret Harbour, check the spot out just south of the surf club, the beach is huge! very few people on the beach, super safe. The spot has great carparks , toilets, shops, showers, surf club (bar),grassed area away from the wind, viewing platforms, the place has it all, 30 min south of Fremantle Turn right on Anstey rd.
As the spot is a new housing area, i think it would be quite easy to pull a large sponsor from one of the many real estate companies in the area.

To ride, the spot is sick! I try to get there a couple of times a week if I can. SW is great and the place rocks on S winds , it's a total skate park with waist to sholder waves most days when there is a bit of swell ( no outer reef).
there are some super smooth flat sections between the waves, and if you're lucky you'll catch a little barrel, boosting on the way out is cool, But choose your wave carefully there are a few on odd angles that will send you in to a spin!!
This would be a spec location to have the nationals.
go and take a look for yourselves before deciding on Woodies, Gero or Lanno.
oh yeah if its SE all we need to do is move north a bit on the same beach towards long point and you have nice safe cross offshore ( the beach bends around to the west)How good is that?
Have fun Choicey

Make the event about kiting and not about spectators......this is what went SERIOUSLY wrong with the last two nationals...knowledge first hand.
My vote to Lancelin because,
1.Visitors will have to hire cars anyway.
2.Lancelin is not that far away. 1 and a half hours.
3.The town is based around tourists so half the town is full of affordable accomodation.
4.You can walk to the shops, beach and pub.
5.The pub rocks when a crowd is there...ie:windsurf classic.
6.There are 4 differnt locations to mix up the event at, all about 3 minutes from each other. Back beach for secret harbour like waves, the lagoon for flat water or north point for flat water, the waves south passage and main break.
7.Once you are there, you dont have to be driving back and forth from the event each day.
8.Everyone is together
9.Your gear and valuables are less likely to be stolen in Lancelin.
10.the town is used to competitions, less dramas when people get rowdy.

I dont understand why everyone wants this event in Perth when there is a perfect tourist friendy location only an hour and a half away. I have friends in Sydney that will drive that far every day there is wind just to kite!!!!

Perth- a lot more accessable to the public. Spectators won't be bothered to drive all the way to lano. Good exposure for the sport if held in town

Lano is so close, Ive done day trips 4 or 5 days in row. And as for accomodation what happened to sleeping in the car?? Lano is close enough for those who dont have holidays to drive up just for just 1 day or even the weekend. Small price to pay to ENSURE the best possible conditions.

Rez you can be my groupie any day

Most people work till 5:00 so theres really not much chance of seeing any of the contest after work. And I dont want to watch 5 days of heats, most comps finish on weekends so I'd be happy to drive to Lano to watch the finals.

Another idea for those interested in publicity, if the contest was held out of the metro area maybe there could be an expression session on a spare day at scarborough or something?

The arguments for having it in Perth are like bringing the Solomon Masters to Perth so that more people will be able to see the action .
I think the conditions and the safety of the competitors and public are the main issues .
Having spoken to a few of the Eastern state guys at Rotto and the AKL , none of them seem to object to going "out of town " instead were quite keen to go somewhere with good conditions .
Personally I think Gero is the best option , Point Moore is the perfect flat water set up and for waves the crayboat for the judges out at hells gates worked well for the windsurfers .
At the gero comp we had kites and windsurfers going all at once and it worked well .

Does anybody know what sort of promotion it will get to bring the "crowds" in .. e.g. will there be radio/tv/newspaper/web adverts, or will only kitesurfers who find out via word of mouth go for a look...?

I think it would certainly take as much media exposure as possible to get people to come along. Certainly within Perth there is a big community of kiters so word of mouth would help, but if we want to get joe-public along then we would need the backing of the press/radio/tv companies.

BTW who actually organises the event? Is it organised by a main organiser on the east coast or is it organised by the place holding it, and they have a free reign to do whatever they want?

You are right Shannon, the finals in the past have always been on the weekend, as the event runs over a 7 or 8 day time period. Most people would see that as a great chance to take the weekend off and head up to lano to see the finals.

I think on another avenue of interest, people should consiser why Mambo at the small town of Merrimbula is so successful. This event definately isnt based on how many people can come and watch and it is an amazing comp.

There are the Lancelin Classic, and the Wind Jam at Lano that have major sponsors and are great events. As for the spectators, the bulk of the event is held during the week.

The events in Sydney and on the Goldcoast were inconvenient for everyone, but the organizers did look after us by giving us the option of cheap accomodation local to the event. Everyone was staying in hotels ect......... so yes we do need to give that option over here too.

Could it be that it is sponsored by many big companies?

Check them out - http://www.acr.net.au/~msc/sponsors.htm

Yes they have major sponsors at Mambo put they are all around the prizes. They have a selection of prizes on the table and as you get your placing you go up and pick a prize. No cash prizes. The local companies support the comp like the pub ect, because there are a a couple hundred competitors drinking and spending$. I think people would go to Mambo without the prizes. Its the social side of the event and being together partying that make it happen. Besides, Mambo has developed over the odd 15 years.......it has SLOWLY developed and gathered sponsorship. Nationls have a lot less time behind it. Besides people are competing for the title of Australian Champion.

So will the nationals attract a couple of hundred competitors to make it viable for the local companies to support it?

I'm not sure of the exact number that turned up for the 2004 finals, thought it was around the 50 mark? But I could be way out; if anyone knows it would be a useful indicator.

I'm not trying to be negative about the event, it's just after hearing so many reports (particualary those from competitors) about how bad the last nationals was, it would be a shame for WA to cop the flack if it fails again.

Maybe the suggestion in the other thread about getting the competitors to vote for where they would like it held should be the way to go. That way if the event is a flop they only have themselves to blame.

Wherever the event is held in WA I don't think it will fail as I think the passion of the people here will ensure that it is a cracking event. The only downside is that people who would really like to go and watch may not be able to due to distances and costs.

This is another thing that is open , the dates to run it .
Is it better in Jan when everybody including the schools are on holidays or do we have it in Feb so it is easier to get cheaper flights ?
Rez , you are right the judging needs to be sorted out and is being looked at .
Suggestions on this are also needed .
It was put forward to reduce the size of the square and to have competitors come through one at a time then around a priority buoy upwind before being able to come through again .
This will ensure the judges don't miss anything but might set up a more pressured and one hit performance rather than a fluid and consistant combo of tricks ?

Am I imagining this or isn't there a certain amount of grant money used to get this event going? Or is financial imput only from sponsors?

Rez

you arent imagining anything with the government grants thing, the only drama is that to apply for a grant it usually has to be 12 months in advance. This depends on the state governement but that is the usual turnaround time.

Sponsors are a bit like the grants, you usually need a good 6-12 months lead in time to get them. Also a huge amount of time and effort is needed to get all the paper work in order to make it a viable option against all the other sports, people and events trying to get the elusive sponsors dollar. The biggest question a sponsor will ask is how many people are likely to see the event. If the event is planned purely for the competitors and you dont want a crowd then they usually wont want to give you money, if on the other hand you can get the final result onto TV and at least 200,000 people may see it then the most a sponsor will probably pay would be around $3000.
Big sponsors dont realy care to much about the event and the people in it they care more about who will see their banner.
