Hi Mates,

i want to start kite surfing in australia. i had in germany on a lake a full weekend lessons, so i kow the basics.

now i am living in sydney and i have got plenty of time. so i what to spend it in learning how to do kite surfing.

frist problem, i need kite stuff. i do not know what to buy. i just know, i want to travel in 2 month to the west coast. so i need a good beginner kite which i can use in most conditions, if it is possible!!!
i have a weight of 80 kilos.

so which size would be a good choice for me??? 12 or 14 or may be bigger???

which size and what kind of board is a good choice??? do not tell me to buy a big surf board, cause i think i am a quick learner so i want to buy equipement which i can use also when i am advanced.

i have got also 10 years of snow board experience. so i think that is helpfull.

i do not want to take more lessons, because i think i am not bad in controlling the kite, i have previous experience in controlling kites.

so what i really need is my own stuff an practise!!!

if here is someone who can give me serious advice what to buy i would be really happy.

if someone wants to sell his old stuff tell me and if here are people who like to meet a crazy guy how also wants to learn kite surfing please contact me. maybe we can do it together in sydney smile..

thanks..

Hey there Electric,

look no further than your friendly Kitepower Store when looking for kites!

We have loads of 2nd hand gear and new gear for you to check over, demo, and getr the full run down.

I would recommend a 9m BEST Yarga and 132 UNDERGROUND FLX - for the West coast i'd say that will be fine - most of the time. Maybe 9m & 13m...

Anyway come on down or give us a call
cheers

im 90kg's and learnt on a 142 caution redline and 12m low aspect kite. what a horrible combination. go for a mid aspect kite (yarga as tim suggested would be ideal, just make sure sizing is appropriate for your weight - 9m might be too small) and as for the board go for something with a bit of extra width instead of length - this will make the board much more forgiving without sacrificing the small board feel too much (unless you go too wide, which can be a handful).. also dont underestimate the addictiveness of this sport. if you buy a small board, chances are you will buy either a big board, or a big kite, later on to better ride the light winds. It might pay to get a bigger board now, and have a better learning experience then buy a small board later for powered riding and keep the big board for light winds.

i was in the same situation as you around xmas last year - did 3 days of lessons in the UK, lots of prior boarding experience and confidence. came back here a couple of months later and bought my gear, then dislocated my shoulder first week out and had to wait until april to start learning. so make sure you are not *over* confident, and take things slowly at first or you will get smashed. 10 years snow boarding means you can ride a board, 2 days lessons does not mean you can fly a kite. I learnt that the hard way

Good luck mate!!

You might find your snowboarding handy for riding switch with the kite, but awfully inconvenient for anything else. Remember, you have to put your weight on the back foot on the water...

I'll get you yet Von Richtofen, you fiend.

i would not go bigger than a 12m . a second hand fuel , diesel 11m would be great for your wieght and for the board i would not go bigger that 148 .i am 92kg and have a 12m and that work 80% of the time in perth .
this is a sport which you can not expect to be good at because if you do thing will go wrong . so get more lessons i suggest two ,one in deep water and one at the place you think you will ride the most . I had five lessons and even the instructure thought that three would be fine but you should see my learning curve .and what i have learnt in only a month . and whats a an extra $140 when you will spend $1500 on a second hand kit.

Electric

If you have been following the wind for the last month, you will see that we do not have the wind that perth does. Lately it has been 5 or 6 days of 8 - 15 knot winds followed by 1 or 2 days of storms bringing rain and 30knot gusts. Last year most people lived on their 16's in the summer and 12's in the winter where gusty conditions are more common. I weigh 83k and use my 15 most often though lately have been desperate and have had to use a 20 just to stay up wind.
I would recommend a 14m for Sydney area, and a small but wide board say 128 to 132 by 38 or 40. The newer smaller boards hold their edges well and plane up quick due to width.
The swells have been big of late and you may want to stay in the Botany Bay area if you are not used to jumping over the crests to get out.
Problem with all of this is when you go to Perth you will be at top end to overpowered with a 14. So what kite you buy really depends on where you will be spending most of your time.

My 2 cents

p.s. Congrats WA on a well run Nationals.
