Gday all Kiters!

im rosco and im fairly new to kiting, i did a $200 grom lesson at that whitfords beach and then went to queensland for a while and have came back with a 14m Niash X3.

so i still need a harness for a 32" waist and if anyone can help me rig up a donkey's dick or tell me where to get them that would be sweet.

im looking forward to kiting soon, so ill see ya out there.

Cheers

a 14m is pretty big and best only used in light winds.

Try and get your hands on a 10m bow/hybrid or c kite with a fifth line and a twin tip(150cm or thereabouts).

You can make your own donkey dick by using a thick cable tie and a piece of garden hose. Make sure your safety releases are working and you have tested them before engaging your donkey dick.

cheers mate, i was wondering what those cable ties were doing in my kite bag. nice idea. i think ill need a 9m, maybe a DNA or a FLOW, is there a site somewhere witha graph outlining max wind speeds for kite sizes?

manufacturers will give you guidelines but not all factors are equal.

wind speed in knots in one location doesn't mean the same in another. i.e. in WA we have dry winds so the wind speed needs to be more than say cairns where the wind is heavier blah blah...

but as a guide:
you are after a 32inch harness? so i will guess and say you are 73kgs and about 5.11.

a 10m kite with a 155cm board will do you for 10-20knots. The same kite with a smaller board 128cm will do for 18-38knots.

So buy one good kite, a larger learner board(which doubles for light wind) and then as you progress get a smaller high wind board.

have a read of this. basically as i understood it. energy relies on mass and as the more humid the air the more mass it has therefores delivers more kinetic energy at the same wind speed.

Hey Meerkat,

Air with water vapour in it is lighter than air. Sounds counterintuitive, but true.

From here: peswiki.com/directory:enviro-mission-ltd-solar-tower
the more the air can be saturated with water vapor the lighter it will be

I'm always doubtful about the "Cold wind at 20 knots has more grunt than warm air at 20 knots" theory anyway, as well as the water vapour theory. To measure wind speed the wind has to hit the blades of a wind meter, so if it has more grunt then it will make the wind meter read higher, so as far as you can tell the "wind speed" will be higher. I fail to see how a kite and a wind meter would behave differently.
Also if you do the maths the difference between air at 10 degrees and air at 30 degrees is 3/8 of FA, the same goes for humid vs non-humid air.

kited in edinburgh, malaga, tarifa, invercargill, brisbane, byron bay, perth

windsurfed in cape town, gold coast, bali and done some skydiving in a few locations as well.

The humidity, number of dust particles etc all make a huge difference when wind comes into play. I don't understand fully, and to be honest it doesn't really matter. I just grab my kites and head to the beach when theres wind. I'll leave all the technical mumbo jumbo to other folk while i try and get my head around a handle pass. :)
