not wanting to bring any hate to the table but the FAQs is a bit ... well, kind of inappropriate. It shouldn't really say anything about how to teach yourself stuff like turning or basic kite control; for example:
How do I control the power of the kite?It is the position of the kite that determines its power. If you are getting overpowered on the water you can edge harder to reduce you board speed. This will bring the kite round into a less powerful position.
How do I switch directions, either using the board or the kite?To change directions you need to bring the kite from one side, gently over the top to the other side. At the same time you need to pressure the downwind side of your board at the tail, and turn it around to follow the kite. If you are using a twin tip board you simply need to transfer weight from your back leg to your front (or new back) leg as the kite starts to pull you back the other way.
I'm sure you have all seen noobits trying to teach themselves or even their drunken mates only to get pulled along the beach a bit before crashing, lines and all into other people, families go to beaches as well. They are a real threat to our reputation, even if it's not a good one to start with we don't need any more people saying; "oh, you kiteboard, iesh your gonna get yourself pulled into powerlines if you keep that **** up".
Also the price estimate...
How much does it cost to start Kiteboarding?Equipment will cost between $500 and $2500. Lessons will cost around $100 - $300. Wind is free!
I got my mate in at the cheapest price anyone should ever go, $400 for a second hand kite more holey than than the pope, and $400 for a board and harness. Any cheaper and your looking at two lines!
People may feel ripped off if they spend 500+ on lessons as this sort of expenditure is what I WOULD HOPE ALL BEGINNERS SPEND IN ENSURING THEY ARE NOT A THREAT TO OTHERS and are less likely to kill emselves. for example
kiteboardingschool.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=160&Itemid=121AKS is one of the best schools in Perth, two half arvos with them is a minimum for most. I am also pleased to see they have taken up the same deal as choice in offering unlimited free lessons with purchase as this will mean less of their customers who spend $300 for a single lessons and think they can save big by teaching themselves from that point on will come and give us grief.
it's nearly 2 grand for a 12m flow, add $900 for a decent board and 200 for a harness and your looking at near on 3K (you have to pay RRP with AKS to get the free lessons according to the web site). if you want the best stuff 3300 is expected. some people buy two kites from the start.
