G'day

we've just moved to scarborough from the east coast and are looking into getting started in the next week or so,
we'e done the rounds to all the kite shops in the area and are wanting to finalise our kite and board set-up. I have a fair bit of wakeboarding experience but my bloke has none.
steve at windforce was raving about the 07 Flow, but at $1200 more to buy new season kites for the two of us over 06 flows its a bit of a tough decision.
we are both looking for kites we can progress into so will the 06 flow suit us still quite well or should we shell out teh extra?
and of course are their any other kites that would sound like they would suit us?
oh and we are looking at switch boards for the two of us.
obviously an instructor would be teh best to ask after our first lesson but 06 stock is quickly running out so we are a bit hard pressed for time.

thanks heaps

Hi, I have a 150cm long airush 06 switch boards...I use it as my light wind board as I weigh in at 72 kilos.. not all that excited about it to be honest... its pretty hard on the knees with chop and for a learner I think would be way too much skate (those 6 fins don’t really do much to be honest and the weird concave - isn’t as good as a single concave) if your keen on airush maybe the hammer would make a better board for you guys.. Was speaking to a newbie down the beach on his 135 switch and he said the same thing regarding the amount of skate.. my board of choice is the 122cm 06 underground flex...might be able to pick one of those up cheap although the 122 is a bit on the short side for newbie’s.. Email me and I will sell you my switch for 450 bucks considering it was 1200 last year ....

Last season flow and this seasons are way different kites. … go for the new season one if you can afford it.
Ask yourself why the last season flows selling so much cheaper....

Best of luck!

more in need of boards than kites, we'd rater spend a lot on kites and not much on boards, so anything that would suit a beginner would be good. i'm 55kgs and he's 70.

thanks

you could spend 1950 on a kite and sell it for 900 next year or buy an old fuel or similar off some one who prob paid a whole lot cheaper than you would for the kite new. you could save 2000 between you or so in one year.
there is nothing wrong with the Flow but its not gods gift to kiters and its price tag's huge but all 07 kites have excessive costs this year by the look of it, although there are bargains to be found.
look at the 06 fuels/other C kites for sale or similar that are a good kite although been superseded by bows and sle's

im amazed how many people have bought new kites when they are learning because you will crash it hard many times and maybe even take it to hold the line one time.
dont be bull****ed into buying a new board for just learning on. anything around the 30 mark is big enough for learning on and you can continue to use it when you have got it all under control

for your size you could go 7 and 10 although it depends on what style kite you buy as some sle's have a lot of power to size compared to the older c's

talk to darren or who ever it is thats giving you the lessons and he will point you in the right direction

Talk to the guys at WSP, they also have a good selection of used stuff http://www.kiteaddiction.com.au/kites/used.html

I would look at getting 3 kites, something like a 6-7, 8-9, 10-12. For wakeboarding style you will want more C and for depower, waves and relaunch, more bow..........IMO. All depends on budget.

I share gear with someone 30 kgs lighter and we have 3 kites and 3 boards..gets us out in all conditions. Sticking with one brand through the sizes reduces complications also.

Give the guys @ west oz kiteboarding a call 0438 591 755, they did us some awesome deals on 07 gear, airush is so overpriced for what you get.

Myself and a mate got 07 boards for around $600 in the packages.

Enjoy whatever you get.

thats probably because you had lessons with them and they offer good prices to thier students. as well as being a great crew to learn with using good kites too (be nice if i had decided to get my one before the Xmas rush though and i wouldnt be so jealous of them using their ones ) but to add on to that : Aus kiteboarding school = top kite school in the north half of the city (airush), West oz kiteboarding = best kite school in the south (Liquid Force)

Hi Rebncosh,

If you can at all afford it, buy the new stuff, it'll be worth something when you go to sell it, not to mention it is waaaaaay safer and more user friendly and the wind range of one kite is similar to almost two kites.

Come up and see us about 10-15 minutes north of where you are and you can check out or even hire our range of 07 gear (Flows and DNA)with appropriate training Advice is free all day long.

Also have a look at our website, specifically the FAQ page as it will answer many of the questions you probably have as a newbie.

Cheers and good winds,

I've started this year as well and made a decision that I'd buy new kit from the start for the following reasons:

Safety - newer kit is always much improved from outdated kit in performance and safety aspects.
Learning - the more confident you feel will help you to learn faster.
Resell - at least new kit will have some value if you decide to pack it in.

I'd taken lessons with a couple of instructors and tried different types of kite (foils, LEI) before buying something. This is really useful in helping you work out what to buy.

Years ago i learned to windsurf with 2nd hand kit, it took a little longer to learn, and prevented me from nailing some moves and techniques.
