Okay so i need to buy my own gear now, I am keen to purchase an 06 kite which turns quickly and can depower very effectively. It's my first lot of gear so I'm a bit hesitant when listening to sales people advise me on stuff.

From trawling your fantastic forums (shameless plug) I thought I was looking at a 9, 10 or 11m kite because i only weigh 62kg. I want to be able to kite in 10 knots minimum, hopefully up towards 25 knots.

Now the chick at the kite shop reckoned i'd need a 12m, she also had a good deal which involved a brand new F-One 12m 2006 model with a free harness, lines and bar for just $890 with warranty. this sounded pretty sweet to me, but i'm just not sure if she's trying to pull a swiftie on me with the sizing.

Is a 12m kite going to be too large for me at 62kg?

Thanks in advance,

Neill

The 06 Rhino 12m was a good kite. Great depower, stable, blah de blah de blah. There are heaps in the buy and sell section.

i think thats a pretty good deal, i bought mine new for about $1400 kite/bar only
i love my f-one and fly the 06 impact... i am planning on sticking with that kite for a while longer unless something tragic happens to it

just you so you know
i learnt on a 10m
my main kite is a 9m and i use that most of the time 15 to 20kn
and i weigh 48kg

if i were you id get an 11 or 12m... you will prob get the most use out of that size...
also what sort of wind would you be going out in majority of the time because that would probably influence my decision on what size to get as well

i weight 65 and ride a 10m 2007 rebel, its fine for me in most wind conditions. if this is any indication

a 12 might be too much for you in strong wind
good luck

The 10m 07 Rebel is supposed to have the range of the 12 c-kite. You'd probably be ok with the 12m f-one from 10-20 and maybe 25 the better you are. The f-one has a good depower and the deals pretty good. Next step would be to go on the f-one web site and and see what they say the 07 model wind range is because the 06 wil be pretty simillar. Good luck.

Thats pretty cheap. Is it definately a new kite. That would be below cost or very close to. Do you know if it is a Tribal or an Impact. I thought that F-one did the odd number sizing, you know like 9,11,13 etc. If it is definately an 06 f-one at that price you would be crazy not to take it. Sounds a little to good is all

thanks for the help guys!

yes the 12m F-One was a Tribal i'm pretty sure. it was a 5-line kite and was blue, red and mainly white if that helps identify it. it was definately brand new, they were just trying to clear stock out from last season i think. free lines, bar and harness sounded pretty sweet to me - all for $890.

I have just had a look through the buy and sell section here as well, there's a bloke near me (hi Ian) selling a 2005 Cabrinha Nitro 10m, a Contra 16.5 and a 4-line setup with bar for just $500, no repairs no damage. sounds like a pretty sweet deal as well - i'm going to have a look at it tonight and might purchase if all looks good. the 10m cabrinha has pretty good reviews, seems a nice grunty kite and then i wouldn't be so worried about bashing the thing into a fence since it only cost me $250. the big 16.5 i could use for super light winds and cruising around if there was no wind.

anything specific i should look out for with these kites? particularly the 2005 cabrinha?

thanks for all your help so far!

cheers,

Neill

Don't go the Cabrinha's man. Just get the F1. Far better deal. Those Cabrinha's are the old style. A new style kite will serve you much better and longer and safer.

hehe, too late!

i went and had a look at the kites tonight, they were in great nick and couldn't pass it up. i may still end up buying a newer 12m in a month or so if the 10 proves to be slightly underpowered for everyday kiting.

going to go get a harness and safety strap this weekend for the cab lines and go fly the thing, just need a decent board now

cheers!

Well i think i made a good choice on the kite size, i bought a Da Kine seat harness and slingshot safety leash on the weekend and took the kites down to the maroochydore river outlet. 5 knots or less on saturday, i could JUST keep both kites flying but there really wasn't enough wind at all.

sunday was much better, there was a steady 10-15 knot south easter and i got some excellent practice in with the 10m. i don't have a board yet but i practiced some launches, depowering and powering the kite, upwind body dragging and just mucking around in the water. successfully taught myself to body drag upwind with one hand on the bar - surprisingly easy to do. the kite performed beautifully and the little 10m had PLENTY of grunt - even lifting me clear out of the water a couple of times when i dove it through the power window on full power.

i think i'm going to sell the 16.5m, it's just too big. so if anyone knows someone looking for a MINT condition 2005 Cabrinha Contra 16.5, let me know! i'll probably stick it up in the for sale section here soon.

next step for me is to get my hands on a board and get on the water - can't wait.
