Hi Otte
The winds are usually good at that time of the year. NE and SE alternating. Water temp approx 20C, air temps between 20 to 35C. I think newport works best in the NE, you should not be too worried about sharks. You should be much more worried about the rocks, the lots of people in the water swimming and surfing, especially the local surfers!
Its not a place for an inexperienced rider, absolutely not suitable for begginers, and I hope it never gets on kite beaches (not without lots of warnings).
Its in Sydney, a city of 4 million people, so it gets crowded in summer.
Hopefully someone from up that way will post, I have not kited newport.

Narrabeen in a NE - SE, Long Reef in a S - SE, Palm Beach in a NE.
Stay well clear of Newport, to see why, head to the lookout at the top of Queens Parade East. From there you can see the Newport Reef where the few guys that ride newport venture. It only works in a SE and is only for those that can take full responsibility for themselves on the water.
I live in Newport and have kited for 2 years, yet to bother kiting here..
Have fun!

thanks a lot so far! i have never been to australia and this is why i posted here to get used to the rules you have down under! so you say newport is a quiet safe place to kite if you are a skilled kiter? no really dangerous things swimming in the waters etc!?
